Drought Boosts Interest In City Bulk Water Sales
By SHANNON HAUGLAND
Sentinel Staff Writer
With the drought in California, the Southwest and Mexico, the Gary Paxton Industrial Park has seen an uptick in calls from companies interested in purchasing bulk water from Blue Lake, park director Garry White said Monday.
“I’m waiting on official proposals to move forward,” White said at the regular GPIP board meeting. He said he’s been answering questions and providing information to three interested parties.
A company called Arctic Blue Water has a contract to purchase up to 2 billion gallons per year of Blue Lake water but has yet to purchase any. It paid $10,000 in March 2021 for the contract, which includes provisions to increase its allocation for an additional 6.8 billion gallons. The purchase price is a half-cent per gallon.
If the city receives a competing offer, Arctic Blue can pay the city $350,000 in nonrefundable fees to hold onto its contract, or it may relinquish its rights, White said.
Northline Seafoods/Sayak
In other business at Monday’s meeting, the board discussed the sale of the building on Lot 1, Block 4, formerly leased to The Boat Company.
The city entered into an agreement with Northline Seafoods in 2017 allowing the company to lease the building and purchase it once the company met performance benchmarks related to employment.
“They have met those performance benchmarks,” White said Tuesday.
In December 2021, the Assembly approved a lease assignment to Sayak Logistics. The company exercised its purchase option in June, with a closing date by August 15.
Since the lease is set to expire July 15, the board voted in favor of a temporary month-to-month lease until the sale is final.
On another item at the meeting, the board approved combining lots 2 and 3, and amending leases to the Northern Southeast Aquaculture Association for its hatchery expansion at the industrial park. The official plat change will go to the Sitka Planning Commission for final approval.
The board also heard comments about a possible ballot question to fund a boat haulout. (See story, this page.)
