Native American Heritage Day will be celebrated 2 p.m. Friday with Native dancing and a potluck dinner at the Mt. Edgecumbe High School B.J. McGillis gymnasium.
It is part of Native American Heritage Month activities in Sitka.
‘‘Native American Heritage Day is a specific date within the month which is celebrated on its own,’’ said Dionne Brady-Howard, one of the organizers.
Dance groups from MEHS and local Tlingit dancers will perform, followed by the potluck dinner. A Native foods tasting table will be offered.
The event is open to public.
Also as part of the Native American Heritage Month activities is a beading circle with Jackie 6-8:30 p.m. Saturday at UAS-Sitka Campus. Participants can take their own projects or stop by to learn how to bead.
The final activity of the month will be the Alaska Blanket Exercise program, 1-4 p.m. Sunday, at the SEARHC Community Health Services building. It is a ‘‘participatory history lesson, developed in collaboration with Aalska Native elders, knowledge keepers and educators, that foster truth, understanding, respect and reconciliation among Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples,’’ organizers said.
