More than 30 individual and team runners, swimmers and cyclists participated
in the 35th annual Julie Hughes Triathlon Saturday.
The Julie Hughes Triathlon was first organized by Bill and Carol Hughes and Siouxha Tokman in 1985, in honor of the Hughes’ daughter
Julie who died of complications while undergoing luekemia treatments.
During her cancer treatments she told her swim coach, Tokman, she wished she could participate in a triathlon. The race is now one of the longest running triathlons in the United States.
Individual and team racers in the adult division ran 5 miles, biked 14 miles and swam 1,000 yards. The course for youths included a 1.5-mile run, a 6-mile bike race and a 500-yard swim. This year’s sponsors were Yellow Jersey Cycles, SEARHC, Sea Mart, Weiland Construction, the Ryan Kauffman Fund, and Russell’s.
