BE WELL
Calorie Math: When it comes to losing weight, it turns out the simple math of counting calories doesn’t always add up. Counting calories can be a useful tool for managing weight, but it’s trickier than it may seem. The quality of the calories matters. UPCOMING Tuesday, photos.
Malaysia-Virtual Taekwondo: Virtual taekwondo is gaining popularity as a structured competitive discipline in Southeast Asia. Co-developed by World Taekwondo and Refract Technologies, the sport combines VR technology with traditional techniques to woo tech-savvy young players. UPCOMING Monday, photos, edited AP video for Horizons and SNTV services
GARDENING
Shade Vegetables: Many garden experts praise full sun for vegetable gardens, but a productive garden doesn’t always require the recommended 6-8 hours of direct sunlight. If fences, trees or your house cast shade on your soil, growing vegetables won’t be out of reach if you stick to plants that are grown for their leaves, stems or roots rather than fruit, like tomatoes, cucumber, squash or peppers. UPCOMING Tuesday, photos.
FOOD
Voracious-Hot Dog Reuben: Chefs Bruce Weinstein and Mark Scarbrough offer a fun twist on the classic Reuben sandwich by using hot dogs. The recipe’s in their cookbook “The Instant Air Fryer Bible.” UPCOMING Monday, photos.
Lebanon Mideast Cooking: Anissa Helou’s new Lebanon cookbook spotlights southern villages scarred by war. SENT Monday, photos, video,
Japan-Kirin: Japanese beverage maker Kirin has a growing health business, not just beer, to meet the needs of an aging society. UPCOMING Wednesday, photos.
WEATHER
Nashville’s Weather Watchers: When tornadoes threaten in Nashville, Tennessee, many people here turn to Nashville Severe Weather. This group of dedicated volunteers can always be found on social media, calmly explaining the storm movement, advising when to take cover, and giving the “all clear.” UPCOMING Tuesday, photos, video.
