SUSTAINABILITY

Climate Choices-Reducing AI footprint: As the world tries to reduce its carbon footprint, we are increasing it with every question we ask on line. AI is an energy and water hog, and while it seems like there’s little a person can do, there are a few things. When you query AI, reducing a single word can save a large chunk of power. Don’t be polite, be concise. AI has its uses, but we don’t need it for cookie recipes, directions or office hours. The tech industry is force-feeding us to use it that way, however, a leading AI sustainability expert says. UPCOMING Wednesday, photos.

FOOD

Making Wine Fun: As alcohol consumption declines, wine marketers are shaking things up to attract younger drinkers. They’re ditching the traditional, stuffy image and embracing a more playful approach, including silly or provocative labels, and tie-ins with pop culture events like Shark Week and NASCAR races. SENT Monday, photos.

Food-Voracious-Half-Sour Pickles: Half-sour pickles are crunchy and bright green with a distinct snap and gentle flavor. In their cookbook “Cold Canning,” Bruce Weinstein and Mark Scarbrough have a guide to making half sours with a simple refrigerator ferment. SENT Monday, photos.

BE WELL/GARDENING

Gardening-Be Well-Herbal Tea: How to grow and prepare herbs for a relaxing sip of tea. UPCOMING Tuesday, photos.

DATING

AI Dating Advice: Artificial intelligence adopters have been using the tech in varied ways to find romance. Some patronize AI matchmaking services. Others use AI tools to help build their dating profiles. But the most common way is enlisting chatbots to draft messages to potential matches and interpret messages they receive. UPCOMING Tuesday, illustration.

PETS

Poland Pets in Hospital: Patients in Polish hospices and hospital palliative care units could soon be allowed visits from their pets under a proposed new law in Poland. Dr. Tomasz Dzierżanowski, the director of the Palliative Medicine Clinic at the Medical University of Warsaw, has pioneered the effort. He says many terminally ill patients are in physical and existential pain and that the presence of a beloved cat or dog can ease pain and anxiety. UPCOMING Wednesday, photos, video.

PARENTING

US Social Media-Kids: After landmark court verdicts against major technology companies, advocates are mounting new campaigns to protect children from the dangers of social media. Despite the new momentum and sweeping reforms in other countries, those seeking protections in the U.S. face familiar obstacles in Congress and Silicon Valley. UPCOMING Thursday.

SPORTS

The Power of Pogo: Where some see a pogo stick and think of a child’s toy last seen in elementary school, Michael Mena, Dalton Smith and the rest of the top extreme pogoers in the world see a blank canvas. Soaring 10 feet or more in the air one bounce at a time, this tight-knit group gathers every year at a predominantly Black Pittsburgh neighborhood for “Pogopalooza.” “I feel like it’s similar to a fraternity,” Smith said. “But if like all the frat guys were half jocks, half artists, with a little sprinkle of mystical zest on the whole thing.” By National Writer Will Graves. UPCOMING Tuesday, photos, video.

FASHION

Milan-Fashion-Week-Trends: Amid a heat wave and a heavy global mood, Milan designers lightened up, embracing cleaner silhouettes, exposed skin and relaxed tailoring for next summer. SENT Monday, photos, video.

For Tuesday: Giorgio Armani closes Milan Fashion Week as the Milan fashion powerhouse charts its future following the death of founder Giorgio Armani last September. Photos, video.
