FOOD
Surreptitious Seafood: The future of fish is looking a lot like… salami? And meatballs. And fried chicken. And breakfast sausage. And, of course, spareribs and burgers. This is America, after all. Welcome to the era of surreptitious seafood, an industry gamble that overcoming Americans’ relative disinterest in the meat of the sea is all a matter of making fish look and taste less like, well, fish. By J.M. Hirsch. UPCOMING Wednesday, photos.
Cheesesteak Record: Food vendors inside Philadelphia International Airport plan Tuesday to assemble the largest cheesesteak, as recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records. UPCOMING Tuesday, photos, video.
Voracious-Easter-Pea Soup with Ham: Puréed soups cry out for embellishment. This minty pea soup from the cookbook “Canal House,” by Christopher Hirsheimer and Melissa Hamilton, uses heavy cream, sour cream, snipped chives or minced scallions, or a drizzle of melted butter or olive oil to add more flavor. It’s topped with diced ham and lots of chives. By Voracious. SENT Monday, photos.
Passover-Matzo Brei: A recipe for the eggy, holiday breakfast/brunch dish. By Katie Workman. UPCOMING Thursday, photos.
SUSTAINABLE LIVING
Climate Choices-E-Waste Recycling: Most consumers are guilty of it — filling drawers or closets with old laptops, cellphones, fitness trackers and other electronic devices that are no longer needed. It might be inconvenient to take them for recycling. The world generates millions of tons of electronic waste — also called e-waste — each year. The UN’s most recent estimate, in 2022, said only about 22% of it was collected and recycled. UPCOMING Tuesday, photos.
GARDENING/NATURE
Gardening-Healthy Soil: When we think of a garden, we tend to focus on plants. But the garden is a structure, and it requires a good foundation. That’s where soil health comes in. Soil is not just “dirt.” It’s an ecosystem teeming with nutrients, organic matter and billions of organisms like bacteria, fungi, insects and invertebrates like worms. Here are some ways to improve your soil. By Jessica Damiano. UPCOMING Tuesday, photos.
Finland Arctic Ice Diving: Scientists are learning to dive beneath polar ice and study the study the flora and fauna below. The Finnish Scientific Diving Academy has designed a program in northern Finland for participants to venture below the thick Arctic and Antarctic ice for research. UPCOMING Thursday, photos, video.
BE WELL
GLP-1s-Healthy Habits: Use of blockbuster anti-obesity drugs like Wegovy and Zepbound is growing, with about 1 in 8 U.S. adults saying they take the medications. But the drugs alone aren’t the answer, experts say. Lifestyle habits like diet, exercise and adequate sleep are key to getting the most from the medications. SENT Monday, photos.
Allergy Tips: Allergy season can be miserable for tens of millions of Americans when trees, grass, and other pollens cause runny noses, itchy eyes, coughing and sneezing. Experts say climate change is leading to longer and more intense allergy seasons, but they also point out that treatments for seasonal allergies have become more effective over the last decade. SENT Sunday, photos.
Medicaid Spend Down: As the youngest baby boomers approach retirement age and more older adults need long-term care, a growing number of Americans are hoping Medicaid will help pay for expensive nursing homes and other assistance. To quality, many families attempt a Medicaid spend down, or a deliberate reduction of income and assets to meet the requirements. UPCOMING Wednesday, photos.
TOYS
Legos-Building Blind: A blind Massachusetts man loved building Legos growing up, but his parents had to read him the instructions. Then, a babysitter gave him instructions in braille and sorted the pieces into bags. He was able to build everything himself, and has since teamed up with that babysitter to create accessible instructions and post them online for Lego sets including Tower Bridge of London, the NASA Saturn V rocket and the Statue of Liberty. UPCOMING Thursday, photos, video.
