GARDENING/DAY OF THE DEAD

Marigolds-Day of the Dead: On Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, marigolds are often used to decorate altars and shrines that hold candles, photographs, favorite foods and the personal belongings of departed loved ones. Their scent and bright orange or yellow color are believed by some to guide the spirits back to their families. UPCOMING Tuesday, photos.

HALLOWEEN

Picasso-Pumpkin Carver: For the past 40 years, farmer Mike Valladao has been elevating the art of pumpkin carving at the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival to a new level, creating intricate designs that have earned him the nickname - the “Picasso of Pumpkin Carvers.” UPCOMING Monday, photos, video.

Ghost Hunting: A former psychiatric hospital in suburban Detroit and a funeral home in Toledo, Ohio, offer ghost-hunting expeditions. Visitors to Eloise Asylum and Mortuary Manor, respectively, can embark on guided paranormal-investigation tours of the facilities, or set out on their own with rented equipment, such as a handheld electromagnetic-field detector. UPCOMING Wednesday, photos, video.

Addams Family Town: Before there was “The Addams Family,” there was Westfield, New Jersey. Cartoonist Charles Addams drew inspiration from his hometown’s Victorian homes and historic cemetery, shaping his signature macabre style. Today, Westfield celebrates its famously spooky native son each October with AddamsFest. UPCOMING Friday, photos, video.

Pumpkin Drop: Boston University continues a tradition of dropping pumpkins with all sorts of stuff in them from a tall building - ala David Letterman. UPCOMING Saturday, photos.

HOMES

Housing-Sellers in Limbo: A stagnant housing market hampered by surging mortgage rates, years of soaring home prices and an economy undercut by rising inflation has many sellers stuck in limbo as homes go months without an offer. Many have put their life on hold, unable to relocate for a new job, buy their next home or follow through with other major plans. SENT Sunday, photos.

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS

Be Well-Time Change Explainer: An extra hour of sleep is on the way for most Americans, though the “fall back” to standard time will bring darker afternoons, too. Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. local time Sunday, which means you should set your clock back an hour before you go to bed. One tip: Try to get outside for some morning sun — it’ll help your body clock reset faster. SENT Monday, photos.

FOOD

Voracious-Kimchi Seafood: Esther Choi’s recipe for a Kimchi Seafood Pot, from her cookbook “Hand Taste.” It’s all about seafood in tomato sauce punched up with kimchi and fish sauce, like a Korean cioppino. SENT Monday, photos.
