US-OPIOID CRISIS-PURDUE PHARMA

Here’s what’s in the opioid settlement against OxyContin maker Purdue and the Sackler family

SUMMARY: A bankruptcy court judge has approved the settlement of thousands of lawsuits against Purdue Pharma, maker of the powerful prescription painkiller OxyContin. The deal approved on Tuesday requires members of the Sackler family who own the company to contribute up to $7 billion over time, plus give up ownership of the business. Thousands of victims of the opioid epidemic could be paid thousands of dollars each. The opioid crisis has been linked to more than 900,000 deaths in the U.S. since 1999. The latest settlement follows others for drugmakers, wholesalers and pharmacies that totaled about $50 billion.

US--TRUMP-THE LATEST

The Latest: Trump expected to give Saudi crown prince a warm embrace during White House visit

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump is set to fete Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Tuesday when the de facto leader of Saudi Arabia makes his first White House visit since Saudi agents killed Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. Prince Mohammed denies ordering his agents to kill the Virginia resident, and Trump has only tightened his embrace of the crown prince. The two leaders will unveil billions of dollars in deals, huddle over paths forward in the Middle East and enjoy a White House soiree. The House meanwhile is expected to vote on releasing the Epstein files, having overcome opposition from Trump and Republican leadership.

US--EPSTEIN-SUMMERS

Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers steps down from public commitments after Epstein emails

SUMMARY: Former U.S. Treasury Secretary and current Harvard professor Larry Summers says he’ll step back from public commitments after the release of emails showing he maintained a friendly relationship with Jeffrey Epstein long after the financier pleaded guilty to soliciting prostitution from an underage girl. Summers provided a statement saying he’s deeply ashamed of his actions, recognizes the pain they’ve caused and takes full responsibility for his misguided decision to continue communicating with Epstein. Summers says he’ll keep teaching. Summers served as treasury secretary from 1999 to 2001 under President Bill Clinton. He was Harvard’s president for five years from 2001 to 2006.

Mayor says federal immigration agents will expand enforcement action in North Carolina to Raleigh

SUMMARY: Federal immigration authorities will expand their enforcement action in North Carolina to Raleigh. That’s according to the mayor of the state’s capital city, who says the expansion could come as soon as Tuesday. Mayor Janet Cowell said she didn’t know how large the operation would be or how long agents would be present. Immigration authorities haven’t spoken about it. The Democrat said in a statement that crime was lower in Raleigh this year compared to last and that public safety was a priority for her and the city council.

US--CONGRESS-EPSTEIN

House heads toward vote on bill forcing release of Jeffrey Epstein files

SUMMARY: The House is voting on legislation to force the Justice Department to publicly release its files on the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. It’s the culmination of a monthslong effort that has overcome opposition from President Donald Trump and Republican leadership. Trump now says Republicans should vote for the bill. It all but ensures that the House will pass the bill with an overwhelming margin. That puts further pressure on the Senate to take up the legislation. Epstein was a well-connected financier who killed himself in a Manhattan jail while awaiting trial in 2019 on charges he sexually abused and trafficked underage girls.

US--TRUMP-SAUDI ARABIA

After years away from Washington, Saudi crown prince to get warm embrace from Trump, US business

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump is set to fete Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia makes his first White House visit on Tuesday since the 2018 killing of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi by Saudi agents. U.S. intelligence agencies determined Prince Mohammed likely directed that operation, which sent the U.S.-Saudi relationship into a tailspin. But seven years later, the dark clouds over the relationship have been cleared away by Trump. He sees the crown prince as an indispensable player in shaping the Middle East in the decades to come. The two leaders are expected to talk about deals, including for F-35 fighter jets.

Security Council backed U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan for Gaza, which was welcomed by Israel but rejected by Hamas. The plan includes an international force to provide security and a path to a potential Palestinian state. The European Union plans to discuss Gaza reconstruction aid on Thursday. The Trump plan aims to stabilize Gaza and eventually withdraw Israeli forces.

EU--POLAND-SABOTAGE-RAIL

Poland says 2 Ukrainians working for Russia are suspected in railway track blast

SUMMARY: Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk says two Ukrainian citizens working for Russia are suspected of blowing up a railway line in Poland. The line is crucial for delivering aid to Ukraine. Tusk calls it an “unprecedented act of sabotage.” Over the weekend, a segment of the rail line linking Warsaw to the Ukrainian border was blown up. In a separate incident, power lines over another segment were damaged. Tusk told the Polish parliament on Tuesday that the suspects had been collaborating with Russian secret services. Polish prosecutors have launched an investigation into these acts of sabotage. The Kremlin’s spokesman responded by accusing the Poles of Russophobia.

EU--RUSSIA-UKRAINE-WAR

Zelenskyy will visit Turkey in a new bid to jump-start talks to end Russia’s invasion

SUMMARY: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy plans to visit Turkey this week to revive talks on ending Russia’s invasion, which began nearly four years ago. A U.S. special envoy will join him, but Russia will not send a representative. Earlier talks in Turkey achieved only prisoner exchanges. Heavy U.S. sanctions on Russia’s oil industry are set to take effect Friday. On Tuesday, Zelenskyy was in Spain seeking new support. Meanwhile, Ukraine launched aerial attacks on energy infrastructure in the occupied Donetsk region, and Russian drones caused fires in Dnipro. The conflict continues with heavy casualties.

AF--NIGERIA-KILLINGS

Trump says Christians are being persecuted in Nigeria. The reality is more complicated

SUMMARY: Much of northern Nigeria has been battered by conflict in a longstanding security crisis, and U.S. President Donald Trump has singled the country out for what he calls “the killing of Christians” by “radical Islamists.” Victims and church leaders echo Trump’s claims that Christians are persecuted. They say they’ve long been attacked, kidnapped or killed over their faith. But many insist the reality isn’t as simple as Trump’s narrative. Experts and residents say some attacks target Christians, but most emphasize that in the West African nation’s widespread violence, everyone is a potential victim, regardless of background or belief. Nigerian conflict researcher Bulama Bukarti says of the multidimensional crisis: “In essence, it is a war against Nigeria.”

Wall Street drops again as Nvidia, bitcoin and other stars keep swinging

SUMMARY: The U.S. stock market is falling again following a sell-off that swept Europe and Asia. The S&P 500 dropped 1.3% Tuesday and pulled further from its record set late last month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 644 points, and the Nasdaq composite sank 1.8%. Nvidia was again the market’s heaviest weight on worries that its stock price went overboard in the frenzy around artificial-intelligence technology. Another former high flyer, bitcoin, briefly dropped below $90,000 amid worries that its price also shot too high. Home Depot sank following its earnings report, which fell short of analysts’ expectations, and Treasury yields eased in the bond market.

US-MED--AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES-CHILDREN

Kids get diseases like lupus, too. As researchers hunt better treatments, this camp brings joy

SUMMARY: It may sound surprising but kids can get diseases like lupus and arthritis, too, when their immune system mistakenly attacks their own body. With the exception of Type 1 diabetes, autoimmune diseases are more rare in kids but they do happen. Sometimes symptoms are more severe in the very young. Treatment is especially challenging for growing bodies, and researchers are hunting for better options. But doctors in New York last summer helped some affected kids experience the joy of their first sleepaway camp — despite strict medications and nervous parents. The fun helped one boy almost forget his stiff joints.
