EU--RUSSIA-UKRAINE-WAR-CORRUPTION-SCANDAL

A corruption scandal pressures Ukraine’s Zelenskyy to show greater accountability

SUMMARY: Pressure is mounting on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to take stronger action to show accountability in the face of a corruption scandal presenting the greatest threat to his government since Russia’s full-scale invasion. Zelenskyy has dismissed two top officials and imposed sanctions on close associates after government investigators revealed that $100 million had been embezzled from the country’s energy sector through kickbacks paid by contractors. But that hasn’t quieted the political storm. After more than three years of war in which Ukrainians face regular power outages, corruption in the energy sector isn’t sitting well with the public. Calls are growing for Zelenskyy to remove his chief of staff, Andrii Yermak, who many consider to be Ukraine’s de facto vice president.

AF--NIGERIA-SCHOOL ABDUCTION

Nigeria’s president postpones G20 trip, vowing to step up efforts to rescue abducted schoolgirls

SUMMARY: Nigeria’s president has postponed his trip to this weekend’s Group of 20 summit after promising to intensify efforts to rescue 24 schoolgirls who were abducted by gunmen earlier this week in a northwestern region of the country. Civil society leaders have accused security forces of inaction. President Bola Tinubu had been set to leave for South Africa on Wednesday. That’s days before the summit of the world’s leading rich and developing nations was due to begin. But a spokesperson for Tinubu said that the Nigerian leader was suspending his departure in light of the abductions and a separate church attack in which gunmen killed two people. It wasn’t immediately clear if or when Tinubu would leave for the summit in Johannesburg.

Russian attack kills 25 in Ukraine’s Ternopil as Zelenskyy meets Erdogan in Turkey

SUMMARY: A Russian drone and missile attack on Ukraine’s western city of Ternopil has killed at least 25 people, including three children. The attack hit two apartment blocks, injuring at least 73 people. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted most of the 476 drones and 48 missiles fired overnight. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is in Turkey seeking diplomatic support against Russia. He met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Meanwhile, Romania and Poland scrambled fighter jets in response to the attacks. Russia claims the strikes targeted Ukrainian energy facilities and military-industrial targets in retaliation for Kyiv’s actions.

ML--LEBANON-ISRAEL

Israel’s military carries out strikes in Lebanon and Gaza, killing dozens of people

SUMMARY: The Israeli military has carried out airstrikes in southern Lebanon, targeting what it claims are Hezbollah weapons storage facilities. This comes after a drone strike earlier in the day killed one person and injured several others, including students on a bus. Tensions between Israel and militants are escalating. On Tuesday night, an airstrike killed 13 people in a Palestinian refugee camp, the deadliest since a ceasefire in the Israel-Hezbollah war a year ago. Israel claims Hezbollah is regrouping in southern Lebanon. Meanwhile, hospitals in Gaza report that Israeli strikes have killed 21 Palestinians.

US--TRUMP-SAUDI ARABIA-SUDAN

Trump says he’ll push for peace in Sudan after Saudi crown prince urged greater US involvement

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump says he’s turning his attention to helping find an end to the brutal civil war in Sudan. Trump made the declaration on Wednesday after he said he was urged to action by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Trump claims to have ended several wars since returning to office and has openly lobbied for the Nobel Peace Prize. But he admitted he hadn’t given a lot of thought to the fighting in Sudan until he spoke in detail about the civil war with the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia during their White House talks on Tuesday. Trump said he was determined to work with Middle East leaders to end the two-year-old war.

US--DIGITAL CAGE-BORDER PATROL

Border Patrol is monitoring US drivers and detaining those with ‘suspicious’ travel patterns

SUMMARY: The U.S. Border Patrol is monitoring millions of American drivers nationwide in a secretive program to identify and detain people whose travel patterns it deems suspicious. The Associated Press has found that the predictive intelligence program has resulted in people being stopped, searched, and in some cases arrested. A network of cameras scans and records vehicle license plate information, and an algorithm flags vehicles deemed suspicious based on where they came from, where they were going, and which route they took. Federal agents in turn may then flag local law enforcement. The Border Patrol’s parent agency said they use license plate readers to help identify threats and disrupt criminal networks and are governed by “federal law and constitutional protections.”

US--FEDERAL ENFORCEMENT-US CITIES

Arrests now top 250 in immigration crackdown across North Carolina

SUMMARY: Federal agents have now arrested more than 250 people during an immigration crackdown in North Carolina centered around Charlotte, the state’s largest city. Those totals released Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are about double the arrest figures announced earlier this week. The operation that began over the weekend is the latest phase of Republican President Donald Trump’s aggressive mass deportation efforts. Military and immigration agents have converged on Democratic-run cities, including Chicago and Los Angeles. The push to carry out arrests in North Carolina expanded to areas around the state capital of Raleigh in just the last day.

US--TRUMP-THREATENED SPECIES

Trump administration seeks to roll back protections for imperiled species and their habitat

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump’s administration is moving to roll back protections for imperiled species and the places they live. Trump’s Interior Department on Wednesday proposed reviving a suite of changes to Endangered Species Act regulations first made during the Republican’s first term. Those changes were reversed under former Democratic President Joe Biden. Energy companies, ranchers and many Republicans have long viewed the 1973 law as an impediment to development.

US--MILITARY-AVIATION MISHAPS

Data shows a spike in military aircraft accidents in 2024. This year doesn’t look any better

SUMMARY: Internal Pentagon figures show the number of major accidents involving military aircraft spiked in 2024. A series of high-profile aviation mishaps with deaths and the loss of aircraft in 2025 suggest the trend may be continuing. Across the military, the rate of severe mishaps per 100,000 flight hours rose 55% in the 2024 budget year compared with four years earlier. The Marine Corps saw the highest increase, nearly tripling its rate over the same period. The data was released by the Defense Department to Congress and provided exclusively to The Associated Press. It tracks Class A mishaps — the most serious accidents, which result in death or a permanent full disability.

US--TRUMP-THE LATEST

The Latest: Trump signs bill to release the Epstein files after months of political pressure

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has signed a bill to compel the Justice Department to make public its case files on the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein following a yearslong push by survivors of Epstein’s abuse for a public reckoning. The president’s signing sets a 30-day countdown for the Justice Department to produce what’s commonly known as the Epstein files. Those include everything the Justice Department has collected over multiple federal investigations into Epstein, as well as his longtime confidante and girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell. It will also compel the Justice Department to produce all its internal communications on Epstein and his associates and his 2019 death. The legislation, however, allows for some redactions.

US--EPSTEIN-CONGRESS-EXPLAINER

What’s next now that Trump has signed bill releasing the Epstein files

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has signed a bill to compel the Justice Department to make public its case files on the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. It’s a potentially far-reaching development in survivors’ yearslong push for a public reckoning over how the well-connected financier sexually abused and trafficked teenage girls for more than a decade. Now that the bill has been signed by the president, there’s a 30-day countdown for the Justice Department to produce what’s commonly known as the Epstein files. The bill will most likely trigger a rarely seen baring of a sprawling federal investigation. It also creates the potential for unintended consequences.

SUMMARY: U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick of Florida has been indicted on charges accusing her of stealing federal disaster funds and using the money to aid her 2021 campaign, the Justice Department said Wednesday. The Democrat is accused of stealing Federal Emergency Management Agency funds that her family’s health care company had received through a federally funded COVID-19 vaccination staffing contract, federal prosecutors said. Some of the money was then used to fund her campaign through candidate contributions, prosecutors say. A phone message left at Cherfilus-McCormick’s Washington office was not immediately returned.

US--JUSTICE DEPARTMENT-COMEY

New hurdle in Comey case as Trump’s Justice Department faces questions about the grand jury process

SUMMARY: The prosecution of former FBI Director James Comey has hit another hurdle. The Justice Department acknowledged in court Wednesday a possible lapse in how the case was presented to a grand jury. The revelation that the full grand jury didn’t review a copy of the final indictment came during a hearing where Comey’s lawyers asked a judge to throw out the case on grounds the government is being vindictive. Comey has pleaded not guilty to charges accusing him of making a false statement and obstructing Congress. President Donald Trump’s Justice Department says Comey was indicted because he broke the law, not because Trump ordered it.

Wall Street swings through another erratic day ahead of a couple of crucial tests

SUMMARY: The U.S. stock market swung through another unsettled day of trading, ahead of a couple of crucial tests for Wall Street. The S&P 500 added 0.4% after veering between a small loss and a leap of 1.1% earlier in the day. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.1%, and the Nasdaq composite gained 0.6%. Nvidia climbed as traders made their final moves before Wall Street’s most influential stock delivered its latest profit report. Much is riding on it because of worries that AI stock prices may have shot too high. Treasury yields held relatively steady ahead of Thursday’s jobs report from the U.S. government.

Nvidia earnings clear lofty hurdle set by analysts amid fears about an AI bubble

SUMMARY: Nvidia’s sales of the computing chips powering the artificial intelligence craze surged beyond the lofty bar set by stock market analysts in a performance that may ease recent jitters about a Big Tech boom turning into a bust that topples the world’s most valuable company. The results announced late Wednesday provided a pulse check on the frenzied spending on AI technology that has been fueling both the stock market and much of the overall economy since OpenAI released its ChatGPT three years ago. Nvidia has been by far the biggest beneficiary of the run-up because its processors have become indispensable part of AI technology. The company’s stock price rose more than 5% after the quarterly numbers came out.

SUMMARY: NASA is unveiling close-up pictures of the interstellar comet that’s making a quick one-and-done tour of our solar system. Discovered over the summer, the comet known as 3I/Atlas is only the third confirmed object to visit from another star. It zipped harmlessly past Mars last month. Several NASA spacecraft at and near the red planet zoomed in on the comet as it passed just 18 million miles away. The closest the comet will come to Earth is 167 million miles in mid-December. Then it will hightail it back into interstellar space, never to return. NASA’s acting astrophysics director, Shawn Domagal-Goldman, said during a news conference Wednesday that getting a glimpse of the comet presents “a fascinating and rare opportunity.”

Brazil’s Lula joins negotiators at UN climate talks, but no deal yet on major issues

For now, it hasn’t worked. In a news conference late Wednesday, Lula skipped over any update on the status of talks. Instead, he renewed his earlier calls for action, making the case to delegates that the world must reduce its use of fossil fuels like oil, gas and coal. The talks, known as COP30, are taking place near the Amazon and will continue through Friday. SUMMARY: A super-sized World Cup has paved the way for tiny Curaçao and Cape Verde to book their places at sport’s biggest global event next year. It was back in 2017 when FIFA announced controversial plans to expand the sport’s flagship tournament from 32 teams to 48 in 2026. Some claimed the expansion was politically motivated. There were concerns about a dilution of quality and drama due to the expanded format. That remains to be seen.
