ELECTION 2026-REDISTRICTING-INDIANA

DESCRIPTION: President Donald Trump’s campaign of cajoling mixed with threats of retribution isn’t going over that well in Indiana, the latest Republican-controlled state pushed to redraw congressional map in the party’s favor. He’s hit a pocket of Midwestern Republicans unfamiliar with such attempts at influence, stubbornly civic-minded and deeply troubled by the number of threats of violence that have been made against state lawmakers. SUPREME COURT-EXECUTIVE POWER

DESCRIPTION: The Supreme Court’s conservative majority already has allowed President Donald Trump to fire almost everyone he has wanted, despite a 90-year-old decision that limits the president’s power to remove the heads of independent agencies without cause. That ruling has long been in the crosshairs of the conservative legal movement, which has embraced a robust view of executive power. In arguments Monday, the justices will weigh overturning the unanimous decision from 1935 or, perhaps, leaving just its shell intact. By Mark Sherman.

US, Ukraine officials say they’ll meet for 3rd day after progress on creating a security framework

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump’s advisers and Ukrainian officials say they’ll meet for a third day of talks on Saturday after making progress on finding agreement on a security framework for postwar Ukraine. The two sides also offered the sober assessment that any “real progress toward any agreement” ultimately will depend “on Russia’s readiness to show serious commitment to long-term peace.” The statement from U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner as well as Ukrainian negotiators Rustem Umerov and Andriy Hnatov came after they met for a second day in Florida on Friday. They offered only broad brushstrokes about the progress they say has been made.

SUMMARY: Federal border agents have descended on a Hispanic enclave just outside New Orleans, and local business owners are suffering. The city of Kenner has the highest concentration of Hispanic residents in Louisiana and has been a target of a Department of Homeland Security immigration crackdown, seeking to make 5,000 arrests, that began Wednesday. DHS said it has already made dozens of arrests, including some individuals with violent criminal records, but it only released limited information about who has been detained. Kenner resident Carmela Diaz has shuttered her taco restaurant because employees and clients are afraid to leave their homes.

US--FBI-PIPE BOMB INVESTIGATION

Suspect in DC pipe bomb case was ‘disappointed’ after Trump lost 2020 election, prosecutor says

SUMMARY: A prosecutor says the man accused of planting pipe bombs outside the headquarters of the Republican and Democratic national parties in Washington on the eve of the U.S. Capitol attack told investigators he was “disappointed” in the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro told ABC News Live that she believes it is “unmistakable” that Brian Cole Jr. was responsible for placing the pipe bombs on Jan. 5, 2021. Pirro also suggested Cole may have been motivated by claims by Trump and his Republican allies that the 2020 election was stolen from him. Cole remains in jail after his initial court appearance Friday.

SOC--WORLD CUP-PEACE PRIZE

FIFA gives Trump a peace prize in a departure from its traditional focus on sport

SUMMARY: FIFA gives its new peace prize to President Donald Trump. It’s an unusual break from tradition for the sport-focused soccer organization, whose president has become a close ally of Trump. The ceremony happened Friday during the 2026 World Cup draw at the Kennedy Center in Washington. It comes after Trump had openly campaigned for the Nobel Peace Prize, which was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. FIFA president Gianni Infantino had said he thought Trump should have won the Nobel this year for his efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza.

US vaccine advisers say not all babies need a hepatitis B shot at birth

SUMMARY: A federal vaccine advisory committee has voted to end a longstanding recommendation that all U.S. babies get the hepatitis B vaccine on the day they’re born. For decades, the government has advised that all babies be vaccinated against the liver infection right after birth. The shots are widely considered to be a public health success for preventing thousands of illnesses. But U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s committee voted Friday to recommend the birth dose only for babies whose mothers test positive. For other babies, it will be up to the parents and their doctors to decide if a birth dose is appropriate.
