Dear Editor: On behalf of Sitka High School and the Class of 2030, I would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Cruise Line Agencies of Alaska (CLAA) and Norwegian Cruise Line for providing a wonderful educational experience on the Norwegian Joy.
Our incoming freshmen were welcomed aboard for a tour that offered a behind-the-scenes look at the operation of a cruise ship. Students learned what it takes to coordinate the efforts of 1,500-plus crew members from all over the world who are serving more than 5,000 passengers. The scale and complexity of the operation were impressive, but even more meaningful were the lessons students heard from crew members and staff about the personal qualities that contribute to success in any profession.
Throughout the morning, students heard about the importance of a strong work ethic, punctuality, flexibility, teamwork, and a willingness to work alongside people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. These are lessons that align perfectly with the values we hope to instill in our students as they begin their high school journey.
The experience was capped off with a wonderful buffet lunch that allowed students additional opportunities to ask questions and learn about careers in the maritime, hospitality, and tourism industries. For many students, it was their first opportunity to see firsthand the remarkable teamwork required to operate one of the world's largest cruise ships.
We would also like to thank Island Bus, whose flexibility and organization made this opportunity possible. In the middle of a busy day, they ensured that our students could participate in this unique experience.
Finally, a special thank you goes to Sitka Swirls for providing the perfect sweet ending to a wonderful day. Cones were enjoyed by all and were a fitting conclusion a wonderful day
Experiences like this help students connect classroom learning to real-world opportunities and broaden their understanding of the many pathways available to them in the future. We are fortunate to live in a community where businesses and organizations invest so generously in our students.
Thank you again to CLAA Sitka, Norwegian Cruise Line, Island Bus, and Sitka Swirls for your generosity, hospitality, and commitment to the students of Sitka.
