Honored Women
Dear Editor: We are happy to again acknowledge Sitka’s enormous generosity which was shown at SAFV’s 17th Annual Honoring Women Dinner and Silent Auction. The main significance of this event, however, was to spotlight four women whose accomplishments and spirits were celebrated.
We are grateful to Lisa Sadleir-Hart, Marie Murray, Nancy Ricketts and Sherie Mayo, their families and friends who supported them through this event, and to those who nominated them. We thank our sponsors, Davis Realty, First National Bank Alaska, Holland America Line, Venneberg Insurance Inc. and White’s Pharmacy for their support.
We also thank Joe Montagna and Peter Apathy for playing music, Melinda McAdams and students of the Sitka Studio of Dance for their performance, Natalie Wojcik for producing the slide show, and our hostess extraordinaire, Christine Pate, who guided us through the program with humor and entertainment.
We’d like to thank the Daily Sitka Sentinel for promoting the event and printing the honorees’ pictures and biographies, Raven Radio and KIFW for public service announcements; Alice of North Star TV for videotaping the award ceremony; Bridget Hitchcock for helping with flowers and Sitka Flowers for donating the corsages. We thank Colette Nelson and the staff of Ludvig’s for providing a wonderful dinner, Mt. Edgecumbe High School students Danielle Anaruk, Deirdre Creed, Jessica Mute, Treva Esparza, Renee Romer, Tierra Wolf and Bobbie McNeley for helping with serving. And we thank the great staff at Harrigan Centennial Hall who, with patience and friendliness, made sure everything we needed was accessible.
Many businesses and individuals donated items and services for our silent auction, and we are very grateful for the donations. Without these generous gifts this would not be a fundraiser. We also applaud those who showed little restraints in bidding and made this auction so successful.
The funds raised will help SAFV’s mission to provide empowerment-based services to victims of domestic and sexual violence, and to create a culture where violence is not tolerated.

Herring Hop
Dear Editor: The annual Herring Hop fundraiser for the Cape Decision Lighthouse Society was a huge success all around, thanks to all those who made it so, that we would like to express our sincere appreciation for helping us raise funds for the historic preservation of the former USCG lighthouse and 214 acres of Lighthouse Reserve on S. Kuiu Island, where this summer’s work party will begin the window rehabilitation project, and installation of a UV point of contact water purifier. Since 1997, CDLS has accomplished many historic preservation projects, and has been working toward making the lighthouse available to the public. With the continued help of our donors and supporters, this rather large task continues to make headway, and we are extremely grateful.
It is with warm hearts that we would like to thank the following people, businesses and partners: longliner Capt. Steve Fish, F/V Kariel for the load of rockfish donated; Craig Shoemaker, Dave Newman and Seafood Producers Cooperative for processing and keeping the fish chilled; Scott Saline, ‘‘Sea Daddy,’’ on Katlian for taking charge of the galley, using healthy rice bran oil, and making the best fish ’n’ chips on the outer coast of Southeast Alaska, and running the crew like we were fishing, with Dick Dapcevich at the helm taking on waves ‘‘abaft the beans,’’ Dena Lew for prepping the fries; and then, Mike Mayo ‘‘setting the fish baskets’’ and ‘‘baiting the bean bowls,’’ with Sean Cavlan, hauling the french fries in and out, Shylee McGraw loading up the tartar sauce tubs, decorating tables, sign artwork, keeping a lookout on the dessert table, salting; Elvia Torres for cutting the cole slaw; Brandon Marx for galley assist where needed; the brothers and sisters of the ANB and ANS for the hospitality of the stout and seaworthy ANB Founders Hall; Billy Grant at North Pacific and Sitka Sound Seafoods for the ‘‘fish watch’’ and tote of ice; the shiny lights, sound system, and round tables of John and Sharyn Ferrick; the rocking tunes of Joe Montagna, Jen, Colin, Bob, Peter, Slack Tide rips; Kija Rowe-Elstad for this year’s inspiration, the maritime art engraved classical guitar donation, sharing her lovely voice, and Eric Jordan for taking the wheel at the live auction when we needed someone on deck; Jon Lowrance and the Sitka Elks Lodge for use of the french fry cutter; Lyle Hilde for taking a watch at the fish fryer; Summer Mayo and Yan Yang for serving up root beer floats and grub; Susan and Nick of Baranof Island Brewing Company for the root beer kegs; Eugene Solovyov for stepping in to mind the keg and the children who also helped; Brandon and Jamey Marx, Greta Ryan, Chandra Sloan and Megan Pasternak for sweetening the evening with deep dark chocolate cupcakes, apple pie, pumpkin cake, orange zest cranberry muffins and peanut butter pie. Grateful appreciation to all who came to the Herring Hop to support our work on S. Kuiu.
A hearty thanks to our silent auction donors in Juneau: Scott Perkins, Jerry’s Meats and Seafood, smoked ham, Steve Drake, Costco gift certificates, the Rie Muñoz Gallery book and print, and Annie Kaill’s Fine Art and Craft Gallery, the gorgeous earrings; and in Sitka-by-the-Sea local generous donors: Linda Janachek caribou, beaver with abalone buttons moccasins, Alice Bugni, who wandered into the ANB Founders Hall that morning, and returned with a beautiful painting to donate to the auction; Harris Aircraft Services for the one way ticket back to Port Alexander; Mike Mayo, F/V Coral Lee, the stainless circle hooks, former board member and longstanding supporter Kari Johnson Fish, North Sister smoothies and crepes, Eugene Solovyov, Sitka Rose Gallery, Eric Bealer print, Teresa Helem, Sitka True Value, for the Snuggies and barware, and to Sheila Finkenbinder for picking up donations.
Many heartfelt thanks to our local donors in Sitka who annually contribute to the hop: Bob Burnett, AC Lakeside for the ice cream, and philanthropist Roger Hames of the Hames Corporation Sea Mart Quality Foods for the gift certificates. Editors Thad and Sandy Poulson of the Daily Sitka Sentinel for the excellent coverage, and Raven Radio for getting the word out to the fleet, to Jessica Gill for including us in the Herring Fest, and to Elizabeth Figus, our newest board member, for coming alongside, and swabbing the deck when the ‘‘long trip’’ was over.
This letter of thanks is not complete without a special thanks to Michael and Winsome McIntosh of the McIntosh Foundation for their unwavering financial support since the beginning of this adventure. CDLS will be at the sunny Rainy Day Bazaar tomorrow to inquire about the summer work party participation, to join or renew memberships, Cape D inventory will be available, and we will have 20 tickets on sale for the upcoming dinner cruise fundraiser onboard the Boat Company’s M/V Liseron happening May 16.
A sincere thanks to all.
