Literacy Thanks
Dear Editor: The Pathways Coalition would love to thank the very many Waldos who made April 1 a day of books and delights. More than 35 families took part in searching for Sea Walk Waldo and Downtown Waldo. Thank you to Christian Litten, DDF coach, who found two great Waldos for the event.
Ben Hedrick and Eliot Holloway played the two Waldos, wearing the iconic red and white striped shirts, caps, and glasses that children recognize worldwide. Ben and Eliot both delighted and frightened the many children of Sitka while handing out coupons for free Waldo books at Old Harbor Books. Thank you to the Sitka Emblem Club for their committed and ongoing support of literacy events in Sitka. The great women of the Emblem Club provided the funding for the event.
We also thank Old Harbor Books for being a cornerstone of literacy in Sitka. A generous discount meant we were able to stretch the number of books we could give out to children. The youngest child to receive a book was a Baby Waldo strapped to his father’s chest. Callie Simmons and Ashia Lane were there to greet families and hand out books to children all while helping a rush of customers.
Thanks also to Ashia and the Back Door for giving out free hot chocolates to children dressed as Waldo.
We have a thanks and commisseration for the many students of Mt. Edgecumbe High School who were ready and committed to be Waldos when they sadly learned that Saturday school took precedence. The Waldo committee is working on delivering thank you goody bags for their willingness to take part.
