St. Baldrick’s Support

Dear Editor: Why on earth would a 51-year-old woman shave her head? Because I can. Because I am grateful. Because I care.
On April 26 the annual St. Baldrick’s event will be held at the Sitka Elks. As a celebration of five years cancer free I will join with other volunteers to have my head shaved. This is a sign of solidarity for the kids battling cancer who lose their hair during treatment. This is a battle cry to all of those who have had cancer invade their lives as patients, family members, friends or caregivers.
St. Baldrick’s raises funds for research and treatment of childhood cancers. With this event they are empowering us to do more than be sad or angry or dismayed. We can all join together to kick cancer to the curb. Please make the decision to donate or to become a shave for this worthy effort. On the web you can go to www.stbaldricks.org. If you have questions call the event coordinator, Dave Vastola, at 747-6638, or call me. Thanks for your support. Remember, if you donate, I will let you rub my bald head for luck!

Recycling

Dear Editor: How important is recycling to Sitka? How rare in our world is a pristine wilderness island home with fresh air from our snow-capped mountains and clean water gurgling over rocks?
Not long ago while we would still see the incomparable Norm Campbell on-site it was a refreshing break to take our recycles out to the center. We felt virtuous and we looked at neighbors in a new more respectful light because they too were recycling.
Now we are worried. I understand one man is all by himself at the center right now. The city is hard-pressed when it comes to maintenance of all sorts, we know. But though recycling is a new priority for many of us, it is definitely a priority.
