Upon Reflection
Dear Editor: Friday, April 8, 2016, 9:30 p.m. Opening night for the local play just ended. We are driving out of town on HPR near Sandy Beach. It is dark. No street lighting nearby, no radio playing in the car, no cell phone in hand. We see a white object in the middle of the lane we are in. No cars approaching so we swerve into the oncoming lane to avoid what we soon see is a plastic gallon milk jug. All’s well, but as we pull back into our lane we see a slight dark movement on the right and then just passing us is a bike rider dressed in black riding a bike without reflectors. We saw only movement, no reflection on this person.
As we drove on, we reflected upon how the bike rider’s life (and ours) would have been changed if there was oncoming traffic and we had swerved to the right to avoid that milk jug. We most certainly would have seen him/her in our headlights too late to have avoided serious injury to him/her.
Please reflect! And please be careful to notice reflection on the side of the road!

Apology, Encouragement
Dear Editor: Sitka Global Warming Group would like to apologize to local Sitka businesses. On Friday, April 15 we provided an incorrect version of the 2016 Green Business Award winners list to the Daily Sitka Sentinel. Several great award-winning businesses were missing from that 2016 winner’s list: Petro Marine Services, Pet’s Choice Veterinary Hospital, Sitka Food Co-op, Stereo North, and White’s and Harry Race Pharmacy. We apologize for not sharing your good work! A corrected news release has been provided to the Sentinel
That article also contained several businesses and groups who had won awards in the past, but have not yet been nominated nor been awarded in 2016. These businesses – and all local businesses, agencies, organizations, and schools who make efforts to improve our community and our environment – are encouraged to share their sustainability efforts by nominating their business for an award in 2016.
Customers and staff can also nominate a local business. Businesses particularly like to know that their customers recognize and appreciate their efforts. So we encourage simple nominations from everyone in the community.
Nomination instructions are on the http://www.sitkaglobalwarming.org/ website. New nominations for other Sitka businesses will be considered if sent by May 15.
Thank you for supporting your green businesses in Sitka!
Michelle Putz,
Lead, Sitka Global Warming Group
