Health Visioning

Dear Editor: The Sitka MAPP Steering Committee would like to extend deep appreciation to the over 40 community members who participated and shared their vision of a healthy Sitka during the Sitka MAPP Community Health Visioning held Thursday, April 16, at Kettleson Library.

From these ideas and in collaboration with those who attended the Visioning event, the Sitka MAPP Steering Committee will craft a community health vision that will guide the Sitka MAPP community health assessment and inspire Sitka’s citizens as we work to create a healthier community.

A big thank you as well to Kettleson Memorial Library for hosting; to the Sitka Native Education Program and the Island Institute for co-hosting the children’s program; to Chuck Miller, Sally Helm, and helpers for running the children’s program; to Ruth Culp and Kathy Kyle for cookies; to Homeport Eatery and North Sisters Crepes and Juices for catering; to ANTHC and SEARHC for the grant; to the Sitka Health Summit Coalition for support (Braveheart Volunteers, Sitka Community Hospital, SEARHC, Public Health Nursing); to KCAW, the Daily Sitka Sentinel, KIFW and Dan Etulain for publicity; and to the City of Sitka for supporting a healthy community.

Beautifying Sitka

Dear Editor: The Revitalize Sitka: Creating a Vibrant Community Group extends a big thank you to the City of Sitka electrical department for all their hard work in making sure the winter snowflakes were taken down and the summer banners hung in place on the lamp posts in the downtown Lincoln Street corridor.

Radio Quiz Show

Dear Editor: Another Greater Sitka Arts Council event is over, the second Sitka version of the ‘‘Wait Wait ...  Don’t Tell Me’’ radio quiz show.

It was pretty darn good. Thank you to Old Harbor Books and staff for their selling of tickets – that is a great deal for all. The stage was masterfully set by Jean Stolberg who also did a peerless job on the sound. Charlie Morgan was the capable hand on the lights; the Centennial Hall crew was helpful as always, Belly Meat provided wonderful musical interludes, consisting of Ernie Eggleston, Bob Jacobs, Gary Gouker, and Howard Buckbee.

The Sitka audience, as always, were magnificent – thank you. The show was matchlessly managed by host Stefanie Ask (if you get a chance to hear her sing – don’t miss it) and Seaton Bryan, the deep-voiced announcer. The panelists, Collette Costa from Juneau, Erin Fulton and Ben White, were up for the challenge and provided wonderful riffs, improvised asides and extemporized comments.

A huge thank you to our sponsors: Harry Race, ALPS and Sea Mart. To me the unsung stars of the show that you did not get to see are the writers – Tom Hesse, Rachel Waldholz, Sally Helm, Elena Gustafson and Robert Woolsey. They worked several months in advance putting together the script for this show. They are smart, sassy, fun, funny, and very good writers as witnessed by those in attendance – bravo to them! Thank you to one and all.
