Vilandre Field

Dear Editor: On behalf of the City and Borough of Sitka, I would like to extend appreciation to Coastal Excavation, Chris Pearson, for volunteering to complete much needed work on Vilandre Field. Coastal Construction’s crew, Adam McLeod and Cuff Blakley, helped grade and crown the field so it drains more freely. The playing surface was greatly improved by adding, mixing and spreading extra ballfield sand.

Thanks are also extended to Rich Ross at Birch Equipment who contributed to the project by donating the use of a mini-excavator, laser, grade rod and tripod. The mini-ex was used to scrape vegetation from the foul lines. The survey tools were essential for creating the correct crown and grade.

The project resulted in quite an improvement to Vilandre baseball field surface which is now much more playable and safe. Once again, on behalf of the City Park and Recreation Division and the community, we would like to extend sincere thanks for the tremendous community service provided by Coastal Excavation and Birch Equipment.

Derby Prize Correction

Dear Editor: An incorrect and incomplete Sitka Salmon Derby prize notice was submitted to the Sentinel for last night’s issue. This letter serves as a correction.

In honor of the 60th anniversary of the Sitka Salmon Derby, the Sitka Sportsman’s Association is pleased to announce four special prizes this year (in addition to regular leader board prizes). Due to the generosity of Ms. Elaine Strelow, the first salmon turned in which weighs 60 pounds or more will win $6,000.

In addition, we have contracted with an insurance company to provide the opportunity to win three other large cash prizes. The first kings turned in which weigh between 50 and 50.99 pounds, 44 and 44.99 pounds and 21 and 21.99 pounds will be submitted to the insurance company for a chance to win $25,000, $15,000 and $10,000 respectively, based on the pre-selected tenths and hundredths of the fish’s weight.

We apologize for any confusion the earlier notice may have caused. Anyone with questions can call me at 738-7267 or our Derby Chairman John McCrehin at 738-8636. The Sitka Sportsman’s Association wishes everyone good luck in this year’s derby.

Steve Ramp, President
