‘Citizenfour’
Dear Editor: The Sitka Film Society presents the movie ‘‘Citizenfour,’’ a documentary about Edward Snowden and the biggest leak of government documents in U.S. history, at 5:30 pm, Friday, April 24, at the Downtown Coliseum Theater.
The film explores the fundamental question once again: is the problem that the government of the United States is bugging the entire planet, including its own citizens? Or is the problem that somebody has exposed this fact?
It is fundamental because, contained within the answer to that question, is the future of this nation.
There are those who are comfortable with and indeed comforted by the revelations of surveillance, spying, and the subterfuge of personal privacy and autonomy; yet outraged at their coming to light.
And, there are those who are revolted by them (both the revelations and those thereby coddled), and are thankful that there are human beings of vision, integrity, and courage sufficient to be able to say Ya Basta! (“No More!”) in their own individual, personal, computer-geek warrior kind of way: people like Chelsea né Bradley Manning, and Edward Snowden.
The future of this nation depends entirely upon how many of us feel, believe, and know – which way or the other – and are prepared to act upon those convictions. It is really no more complex, nor simpler, than that.
And upon that starkly simple, albeit infinitely complex fact depends whether this nation (and thus planet) is entering deeper into the beginning of a long, dark winter’s night, or the beginning of the birth of a spring’s new dawn.
Tickets are $8 and available at Old Harbor Books or the Downtown Coliseum box office.
