Honoring Women

Dear Editor: Sitkans and out-of-town guests celebrated four extraordinary women at the 16th Honoring Women dinner. With much joy and surprise we heard little-known facts presented about the lives and achievements of these Women of the Year. Our thanks go to Betty Conklin, Cindy Edwards, Marcia Hirai and Mindi Tysor for serving women and children as volunteers and professionals in various and long-lasting capacities and allowing the audience a glimpse as to why they were chosen as Sitka’s Women of the Year 2013.
We thank our sponsors, ALPS Federal Credit Union, Davis Realty, Venneberg Insurance Inc., Wells Fargo Bank and White’s Inc. for supporting SAFV and this event; Colette Nelson and her team from Ludvig’s Bistro for a delightful meal and students from Mt. Edgecumbe High School for helping with serving; Christine Pate, who with wit and wisdom led through the program as mistress of ceremonies; Sharon McIndoo and the women’s drumming group Haa Toow’u Litseen for their performance; Breanne Pearson and Michelle Mahoney for producing the honorees’ slide shows which is always a highlight of the evening; Old Harbor Books for ticket sales; the Daily Sitka Sentinel for promotion, photos and printing biographies of the honorees; KCAW and KIFW for on-air promotion; Dan Etulain and North Star TV for videotaping and broadcasting the honoring ceremony; all businesses and individuals who donated items for the auction, all bidders; and all attendants of the evening. We apologize to anyone we might have forgotten.
This evening filled us with pride for the amazing resources we have in the women who serve and who do not expect any compensation or public acknowledgement in response. This is an enormous wealth we tend to take for granted. Please thank the women in your life for their service to our community.

‘Girls Rising’

Dear Editor: I want to thank the Sitka RESULTS volunteers for bringing the film ‘‘Girls Rising’’ to the UAS-Sitka Campus last week. The film depicts the lives of nine extraordinary girls from nine countries who overcome incredibly adverse living conditions. The main theme was “the strength of the human spirit and the power of education to change the world.” Check out the film’s organization at girlsrising.com.
Also want to give a big thanks to the Sitka RESULTS volunteers for bringing awareness to the ongoing efforts to eradicate poverty.
JoAnn Huff, Sitka
