The following calls were recorded as of 8 a.m. today.
April 24
At 2:29 a.m. a man walking in the 3200 block of HPR said he’d run into a bear. Police gave him a courtesy shuttle to his home.
At 7:58 a.m. a deer was reported struck by a vehicle in the 1500 block of SMC. The deer ran off and couldn’t be found. The car received minimal damage, police said.
At 10:34 a.m. a caller requested a welfare check on a man on Oja Street. Police located the man, who was fine, and was to contact the caller.
A caller reported a possible assault on a child at Goddard Hot Springs. She was advised of her options.
A caller from out of town said he’d been informed by a bank of fraud. He was to pursue the matter with his local police.
A vehicle was reported to have been parked for some time on Hirst Street. Police found the driver had permission to park there.
At 8:57 p.m. a car was reported parked close to the road in the 1600 block of SMC, posing a possible traffic hazard. Police looked for the owner to have it moved.
At 11:04 p.m. two bears were reported getting into communal trash containers in the 2000 block of Cascade Creek Road. Police cited one of the residents.
April 25
At 12:32 a.m. a woman was reported screaming in the 1500 block of HPR. Police were unable to locate her.
Sitka Police
Steven A. Morales, 34, was charged Monday with violating conditions of release.
Emergency Calls
Sitka Fire Department received one ambulance call Monday.
In Court
Charles Swanson Jim, 23, of Angoon, on a Jan. 19 charge of failure to register as a sex offender, a misdemeanor, was sentenced April 19 to 35 days. On a charge of driving under the influence he was sentenced to 90 days with 87 days suspended and fined $2,000 with $500 suspended. He is to complete a behavioral health assessment and follow recommendations. His driver’s license was revoked for 90 days, and after regaining driving privileges he is to use an ignition interlock device for six months. He will be on probation for one year.
Brandon D. Ledbetter, 30, on March 4 charges of assault in the fourth degree (recklessly injure) and reckless endangerment, class A misdemeanors, was sentenced April 19 to 360 days with 180 days suspended on each charge. The time has been served previously. He also was fined $1,000 on each charge, both suspended. He was acquitted at trial on a charge of assault in the second degree - injury with weapon, intent. He is to obtain an integrated behavioral health assessment and follow recommendations. He is to be on probation until April 19, 2026.
John Borglund, 52, on a Nov. 8, 2022, charge of theft in the fourth degree was sentenced April 19 to 20 days, suspended, and fined $500, suspended.
David V. Evenson Jr., 32, on a Jan. 18, 2022, charge of interfering with a report of a domestic violence crime was sentenced April 19 to 180 days with 175 days suspended, and fined $1,000 suspended. He is to obtain an integrated behavioral health assessment and follow recommendations. He is to be on probation until April 19, 2025. A charge of assault in the fourth degree, recklessly injure, was dismissed.

Creed Erickson Coram, 27, of Denver, Colorado, on Sept. 5, 2021, charges of knowingly making a false statement or omission on a Fish and Game application and not having a nonresident big game tag was fined $1,000 with $500 suspended on each, and his sport fishing and hunting license was revoked until April 19, 2024. He is to be on probation until that date. One charge of knowingly making a false statement/omission on a Fish & Game application was dismissed.
On April 21, the court ordered that sentencing of Scott Thomas, 28, on a Jan. 10, 2023, charge of misconduct involving a controlled substance in the third degree, a class B felony, be suspended for a period of probation, three years. A 60-day term of imprisonment has been served. Charges of misconduct involving a controlled substance in the third degree and violation conditions of release for a felony were dismissed.
Calan Michael Putman, 26, on a May 5, 2021, charge of driving under the influence was sentenced on April 21 to 30 days and fined $1,500. His driver’s license was revoked for 90 days, and he is to be on probation for four years. On a charge of criminal mischief in the third degree he was sentenced to 360 days with 300 days suspended, and on a charge of assault in the third degree, causing injury with a weapon, he was sentenced to 36 months with 30 months suspended. The sentences are to be consecutive. Charges on May 5, 2021, of reckless endangerment; assault in the second degree - injury with a weapon, intent; assault in the second degree, serious injury, reckless; and assault in the third degree - causing fear of injury with a weapon were dismissed.
