Beach Cleanup

Dear Editor: On Saturday, April 24, 45 volunteers disembarked at Shoals Point on Kruzof. With extra-large, neon green trash bags in hand, they gathered  marine debris all the way to the end of the black sand beach (location of the recently beached dead humpback whale). The impressive mound of collected waste spoke to the success of their efforts.

The cleanup was organized by the Sitka Sound Science Center and was held in memoriam of our son, Jamie Gorman. It was made possible by the generous contributions of many who made donations to support  SSSC’s marine debris cleanup efforts in Jamie’s memory.

The absolute beauty of the place in which we live was on magnificent display. The cloudless sky, the majestic snow-capped Mt. Edgecumbe and an amazing parade of gray and humpback whales kept us company through the day.

A special thanks to SSSC’s  Kristina Tirman and Lisa Busch whose organizational prowess resulted in this flawless day. Also, our sincerest appreciation to the day’s volunteers for their camaraderie and hard work. And to Jamie’s surfer buddies, who brought his essence and spirit once again to his favorite Sitka surf break, you were terrific. With our gratitude,

Mark and Nancy Gorman, Sitka
