Edgecumbe Prom

Dear Editor: The MEHS prom committee owes a few thank yous to community members for providing a night to remember for our student body. Thank you to our academic principal Mr. Gurule and residential principal Mr. Friske for supporting our first-ever off-campus prom. Thank you to Josh Arnold for taking care of our sound system, Emily Clark for taking our photos and Bruce Christianson for staying late uploading them. Thank you to Christy and Slater Anderson for collecting tickets, and Jessica Twydell for staying late to clean up with us. Thank you to Mary Boose and Paul McGlew with the Sitka Fine Arts Camp for going above and beyond in every aspect of the event! You put in countless hours.

Thank you Sitka Fine Arts Camp for an amazing facility to host the event. Thank you to Trudy Prewitt for your flexibility in transporting 300 students to and from the event. Alaska Airlines, we don’t even know where to begin! Know we are grateful for each one of you who helped make our night one to be remembered.

Sitka Community Hospital

Dear Editor: As a volunteer at last week’s Alaska Health Fair, I noticed that Sitka Community Hospital staff came through for the people of Sitka once again. Due to some circumstances beyond their control, the Alaska Health Fair was unable to bring their full cadre of medical professionals to Sitka for the Health Fair on Saturday.

Initially, Jason Birbal from the Sitka Community Hospital lab volunteered to help with blood draws. Then SCH Home Health manager Audra Whiting saw the need and decided to volunteer as well. Still more help was needed so a Mountainside Family Healthcare nurse Leah Rose came in to help Sitkans – many of whom had been fasting – get their labs drawn.

In one week, staff members of Sitka Community Hospital have given kindergarten tours, collected health data from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and presented it to the Sitka Chamber of Commerce, hosted a Wooch.een (working together) Health Networking group so our town’s health and social service providers can be more coordinated and effective, provided an expert led discussion on Explaining Pain, and provided support for our new community playground.

Sitka Community Hospital is truly an example of neighbors helping neighbors. I am thankful for all the hardworking employees (who also volunteer!) at our local hospital.

Proud of Sitka and the hospital that continually chooses to benefit the entire community,

M. Celeste Tydingco, Sitka
