Fishermen’s Expo
Dear Editor: The Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association hosted a Sitka Fishermen’s Expo on April 2 to provide educational workshops and technical assistance to local fishermen. Thanks to our sponsors, Current Navigation, Precision Boatworks, Alaska Marine Safety Education Association, Alaska Sustainable Fisheries Trust and the Sitka Seafood Festival, all events were free and open to the public.
Fishermen had the opportunity to learn from the experts at Current Navigation and Precision Boatworks about electric and hydraulic systems for fishing boats, receive Nobeltec seafloor mapping training (both basic and advanced) from Furuno technicians, and learn about advances in marine survival and safety equipment from AMSEA.
This spring Sitka Fishermen’s Expo is part of ALFA’s ongoing effort to provide resources, training and educational opportunities for local fishermen. These opportunities would not be possible without the support of event sponsors, presenters and participating fishermen. Thank you to all who made the event possible, and a special thank you to our presenters Eric Holmgren, Paul Rioux, Daniel Joram and Jerry Dzugan for sharing their time and expertise. Thank you also to all who attended the workshops. We look forward to hosting more events and are always open to suggestions for future expo topics. Please give ALFA a call if you have comments or suggestions, or visit our website at alfafish.org to learn more about ALFA programs.
