Resiliency Challenge
Dear Editor: Psychologists define resilience as the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of stress. Resiliency is not a quality that one either possesses or does not possess, but rather a set of tools, thoughts, and skills that one practices, refines, and utilizes in times of challenge that propels them towards a more positive outcome.
It’s been a year since the pandemic changed our way of life here in Sitka. There’s been a lot of focus on the struggles and hardships this pandemic has brought. Despite the stress and uncertainty, we have come together as a community to demonstrate our resiliency and remain Sitka Strong. It’s important to take a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come since the start of the pandemic and recognize how strong we all are. Throughout this past year, individuals have developed different ways of coping and have gravitated towards new hobbies to help them feel better. We’ve all found different ways to adapt to this new way of life and demonstrate our resiliency.
Sitka Counseling is currently holding a “Resiliency Challenge” to share these stories of resilience from members of our community. We want to hear from everyone: How have you found peace, strength, and optimism throughout the past year? This challenge serves as an opportunity for individuals to think about and share those coping strategies that have helped them throughout this past year. We hope that these stories will not only act as a reminder of how resilient we all are, but serve as a source of guidance and inspiration for others, enlightening us all on different ways of coping.
