Easter Letter Response

Dear Editor: This is a response to the Letter to the Editor about Easter: Rather than debate semantics about rabbits and eggs, I would like to point out the vast diversity on our planet.

There are birds of every color, animals of every shape, and people of ALL beliefs and faiths. Yes, even some people who don’t believe in a devil, but that we have the capacity for kindness and tolerance beyond what we might believe.

For NONE of us have the infinite wisdom to know absolutely.

Let’s share this planet and respect each other, not argue over a religion.

We all need things that bring us joy.

V. Smith, Sitka

BHV Online Auction

Dear Editor: Brave Heart Volunteers would like to thank the following businesses for donating items to our Alaska Getaways online auction: Alaskan Dream Cruises donated a nine-day Alaska Inside Passage cruise for two people; Alaska Seaplanes donated two round-trip tickets to any of their Southeast Alaska destinations; and Sitka Travel/Christine McGraw donated one night for four guests at the Stone Lantern House.

All together, these amazing donations raised $5,900 for BHV. We could not be more grateful to Alaskan Dream Cruises, Alaska Seaplanes, and Sitka Travel/Christine McGraw for their generous support, which helps us to continue serving Sitkans who are grieving, experiencing loneliness, or nearing the end of life. We also appreciate everyone who placed bids, including the winning bidders, Susan Hufman, Auriella Hughes, and Tori Hanson.

We also want to thank Claire Turner for providing beautiful graphics to help us market the auction, as well as the Daily Sitka Sentinel, KCAW Raven Radio, and the Sitka Soup for publicizing it. The Alaska Raptor Center also kindly promoted our auction for us!

Thank you, all, for contributing to the success of our fundraiser. We appreciate you!

Youth Basketball Thanks

Dear Editor: Baranof Ballers, in partnership with Sitka Parks and Recreation, pulled off the largest youth basketball tournament ever in Sitka this past weekend, the second annual Hoops ’n’ Herring tournament. Thirty-eight teams and over 300 participants from Sitka, Juneau, Fairbanks, Metlakatla and Petersburg played 146 games in the gyms of Mt. Edgecumbe High School, Sitka High School, Blatchley Middle School and Keet Gooshi Heen here in Sitka. Joining these third through 12th grade participants were over 120 parents and supporters. We estimated this tournament brought in over 300 people, which directly contributed to the city’s economy and, more importantly, Sitka’s health!

Thank you to our sponsors, Hard Rock Construction, Sitka Bottling, F/V Defiant, F/V Patriot, F/V Reiver and F/V Lucy O.

Thank you, Sitka Assembly, for approving and supporting the new Sitka Parks and Recreation program.

Thank you, Sitka School District, for working with Sitka Parks and Recreation to open up more opportunities for our youths. Great team effort!

In Thursday’s front page story about Wednesday’s School Board meeting, the wrong date was given for a budget work session. The meeting will be 6 p.m. April 13, at Centennial Hall.

The Sentinel regrets the error.
