Child Tax Credit

Dear Editor: Are we a country that cares about its children? If so, Congress needs to pass the expanded Child Tax Credit.

The 2021 CTC expansion with monthly payments was nothing less than extraordinary. After payments began in July 2021, child poverty dropped by 40 percent, food security increased, and families finally made ends meet. One important reason for this success was that, for the first time, the CTC was fully refundable making all low-income children eligible for the full CTC.

The U.S. House extended the new CTC past 2021, but 51 senators blocked it and the payments stopped in January. Child poverty skyrocketed. Now with inflation driving up rent, food, and gas prices, Congress must act.

Families and children need help now. We urge leaders of Congress to pass an expanded Child Tax Credit that reaches the lowest-income families with monthly payments as soon as possible.

‘Mamma Mia’

Dear Editor: Last Friday I saw the performance of ‘‘Mamma Mia’’ at the Performing Arts Center. It was a very enjoyable, enthusiastic performance with outstanding work by the young actors, the musicians and the stage and support people. We are truly fortunate to have such inexpensive and high quality entertainment here in Sitka.

Roger Schmidt and the people who have worked with him are to be commended for bringing back to life a beautiful but fading campus and transforming it into a very high quality fine arts camp and theater and for providing a beautiful space for the fine musicians of the Sitka Music Festival.
