Cruising Thanks

Dear Editor: The Sitka Maritime Heritage Society extends a belated but hearty thank you to everyone who made our July 4th WWII History and Wildlife Cruise a smashing success.

A big thank you to our speaker and guest of honor Mr. Walter Dangel, who shared memories from the war (including a particularly funny story about a 30-year-old piece of Spam!) as we toured the WWII installations in the harbor. Many thanks to Allen Marine and their great staff, for a smooth and informative trip out to sun-dappled St. Lazaria.

Thank you to Greta Healy for enthusiastically recording our radio PSA. Thanks as well to all who prepared the beautiful spread of food that nourished us all afternoon. And our utmost thanks to those who have supported our newly-launched 4 for 44 Fundraising Campaign, a tremendous opportunity to make our vision for the restoration of the Japonski Island Boathouse a reality.

Card of Thanks

Dear Editor: My husband, Douglas Hardcastle, passed away on Sunday, July 24. I am so grateful to this community for the support and gift of friendship at this time. Many friends and long time patrons of our businesses have not forgotten me or my family in this time of grief and have been loving and kind.

I am especially thankful to all the wonderful members of the Elks and Emblem Club. My family and many friends came great distances to be here for Doug, but had to get back to their lives, so we needed to have my husband’s memorial right away.

After only three short days, on Wednesday, July 27, the Elks and Emblem Club hosted a memorial and reception. It was a beautiful ceremony with many in attendance. Volunteers worked tirelessly to provide our family with a wonderful reception. Many Sitka friends have come by providing food, flowers and other kindness during this difficult time. Thank you to all our community for the many hugs, kisses and thoughtful words. This love and support will not soon be forgotten.
