DOCS Rules
Dear Editor: What do you make that Governor Parnell pushes for a road between King Cove and Cold Bay for 965 residents to insure traumatic medical assistance while scoffing at free Medicaid expansion for 40,000 Alaskans for year-round medical coverage?
Our governor feeds mistrust against the federal government, saying that the “Feds” are out of touch with Alaskans’ needs.  Who’s out of touch?  This governor embodies DOCS Rule:  The Death Of Common Sense.
Ann Stephenson, Sitka

Vote Yes on 1
Dear Editor: I encourage everyone to log onto Facebook and go to Vote Yes on 1, Repeal the Give Away to learn more about how much money the oil companies are making and how much they are spending to fight SB 21. In other words, follow the money and see who is really benefiting from oil in this state. Vote Yes on 1.
Marcel LaPerriere, Sitka

Big Oil
Dear Editor: I am familiar with oil. My maternal grandfather was a successful oil wildcatter in Oklahoma. His three sons were all in the oil business. My father prospected for oil in his jeep with his faithful magnetometer.
The Big Oil in Alaska has spent several million dollars in trying to discourage Alaskans from repealing the new oil legislation. That is because it removes almost all taxes from them. Of course they have increased production – why not?
We, the opposition, have little money to spend. What we do have are Alaskans who love their state and see no reason to increase the profits of Big Oil.
I can tell you about Big Oil. As long as they are making a profit, they will stay in Alaska. And if they are not making a profit, they will leave. That is a fact.
Of course, even if you feel Repeal the Oil Giveaway is the way to go, voting in primaries is typically poor. People just don’t feel they need to get to the polls. Please show you love Alaska, don’t want our state savings used up, and can see  the Permanent Fund money the way of the savings account. Do vote and get your neighbors and friends to turn out.
Sitka can be a wonderful community when it comes to working together. Show that wonderful spirit and show Big Oil what we can do.
    Thank you in advance.

Designated Drivers
Dear Editor: I and a friend were lucky enough to get to take tickets at HomeSkillet Fest again last weekend and enjoy all the music, food and camaraderie.
As the evening went on, a few people realized they were having just a bit too much fun and, having the good sense to want to go home a little early, waited for one of the cabs that regularly came by. However, some of the cabs refused to allow these merrymakers into their cabs because of the state of their sobriety.
It struck those of us witnessing the scene unfold again and again, that turning down clients willing to pay and having the wherewithal to take a cab was just plain wrong. Did they expect those people to drive? Or walk from the golf course to wherever in the pouring rain with poor lighting on an unpaved, curbless, road with vehicles dodging potholes?
Thankfully, when the event ended a couple of wet, chilly hours later, the Sitka Tribe of Alaska trolley made a two or three free late runs to town and some other good Samaritans cheerfully volunteered to take some of the festival goers home.
Thank you to those good folks.
