Dear Editor: Oh behalf of the Sitka United Methodist Church, I would like to thank the following people and businesses that donated time and materials to our Pets Unleashed VBS program. Included are Mike and Marcia Hirai, Janice Michael, Carol Potrzuski, Greg and Becky Charlton, Maggie White, Janice Hamrick, Guada Nilo, Julia Smith, Vicki Keele, Andy Eggen, Barbara Hames, Cecilia and Roger Higley, Nati Manaois, Justin Thomas, Jessie Natkong and Pastors Kevin and Carol Seckel and  businesses Sea Mart/Hames Corp., Baranof Jewelry, Orion Sporting Goods, Silver Basin and Scholck Mechanical.

Twenty children attended the program, which was a ‘‘howling’’ success. If I have forgotten to mention anyone, my apologies.

Hospital Care

Dear Editor: I was on a kayak excursion on Aug. 10 when I fell on a slippery rock and did significant damage to my arm – dislocated and broken bones (trust me, you don’t want to know more). I was taken to Sitka Community Hospital; being far from home and dependent on people whom I didn’t know added to my anxiety.

As it turns out, I had no reason to worry. The hospital staff made my husband and me feel like part of its family when we were in their care. And talk about calm under pressure: we had a ship that would leave without us, and their actions on our behalf gave no hint of any additional strain this imposed. It was as if they had no concern but to make things right for us.

We would like to also acknowledge the efforts of Connor and Alison Dunlap from Sitka Sound Ocean Adventures, who went beyond reasonable expectations to help us deal with various aspects of our situation.

I’d prefer not to have broken my arm in the first place, but if it had to happen, I am glad it was in Sitka. The individuals who helped us couldn’t have been kinder or more caring. We will always have fond memories of your community and the people who help to make it such a fine place.
