By Sentinel Staff

A Sitka Fire Department crew and the Coast Guard this morning went to the aid of a man with heart attack symptoms on a fishing vessel near Beehive Island, 9.5 miles north of Sitka, officials said.

Fire Chief Dave Miller said the Coast Guard had reported an Air Station Sitka helicopter had launched and was headed to the scene, but the boat crew decided it would be faster to take the patient to the Starrigavan boat launch to meet an ambulance.

“The crew put the patient in a skiff and headed to town,” Miller said.  “Sometimes you need to get moving, and get the person to shore. In this case I thought they did an awesome job getting the person to shore for medical help.”

An ambulance picked up the patient at 7:30 a.m. and took him to Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center. No information about the patient’s age, condition or hometown was available today.
