Treetop Adventure
Dear Editor: Sitka High School would like to thank Sheet’Ká Treetop Adventures and Shee Atiká for offering our freshmen and other new students an amazing start to the 2024/25 academic year.
Due to the generosity of those organizations, 75 young people were able to come together, push their physical limits and support one another on a cutting-edge adventure course. If you haven’t been able to see their facility, you absolutely should. Not only is the course impressive, but the staff is also. They clearly have deep backgrounds in adventure activities and working with teenagers.
This was a wonderful opportunity for our kids to strengthen relationships and connect to the natural world. They pushed both themselves and one another to take chances and dare to do things they wouldn’t normally attempt. This is exactly the kind of healthy risk-taking that helps students recognize that they are more capable than they may believe. Given the current state of funding for schools, it was only possible because Sheet’Ká Treetop Adventures offered a discounted rate and Shee Atiká made a donation to our school that placed this trip within our means.
The fact that we were able to take all of the freshmen was an equalizer that helped the Class of 2028 come together as one entity and build a collective memory.
Thank you again to both organizations.
Laura Rogers, Interim Principal
