Summer Meals
Dear Editor: The Sitka Conservation Society and the Sitka Mutual Aid network would like to express our gratitude for everyone who helped organize our summer meal distribution program.
During three separate events in June, July, and August, we served over 700 free seafood dinners to local families experiencing food insecurity. We are so grateful to Chef Edith and her culinary team at Our Town Catering for their hard work, kindness, and dedication to serving our community members.
These seafood meals were made possible through rockfish donations from Sitka Salmon Shares and salmon from the Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association’s Alaskans Own. Finally, we would like to express gratitude to the many volunteers who helped deliver these meals, thus ensuring access to folks who were quarantining or without vehicles.
Being able to increase access to local, wild foods is especially important to us, as access to food is one of the most visible links between a healthy environment and a healthy community. Serving, sharing, and eating local fish, caught from the surrounding waters, nourishes our connections to the abundant natural environment of the Tongass National Forest and our community here in Sheet’ka.
As we move into the fall, Sitka Conservation Society and Sitka Mutual Aid will continue to look for ways to help cultivate and spread community care and reciprocity. It has been an honor working with you all to serve community members; thank you and gunalchéesh!

Rotary Donation
Dear Editor: Sitka Babies and Books would like to thank the Sitka Rotary Board and members for their recent contribution to our organization. This year marks the 30th year of their continued support!
Because groups like theirs are committed to opportunities for enhancing the lives of our Sitka children, our nonprofit organization can continue in its mission to ensure that all Sitka children have the opportunity to become lifelong readers by offering books, programs and education to the families of Sitka’s young children.
