‘The Bilge’

Dear Editor: I’m impressed “The Bilge” is able to keep drawing unique comic strips week after week.  It takes real dedication to work at a dream the way they do, so kudos to the artist.

Apology

Dear Editor: This is an open letter I have  sent to Sen. Lisa Murkowski:

Dear Sen. Murkowski, I humbly apologize for the crane event at Blue Lake – although you have to admit, the view dangling from an aerial picnic basket 900 feet above the lake was impressive! If you recall, Sitka was desperately seeking federal support for our $150M hydro project, and the terms free to go up but $25M to get down come to mind.

Anyway, I am happy to report that the project continues to power our community. We are the heat pump capital of Alaska, working on claiming that title for electric vehicles and I hope someday to see us become an agricultural powerhouse.

Think of it: with our abundance of hydro energy we can utilize fish-friendly hydro, pristine Blue Lake water, and excess local fish waste to produce commercial scale food. All within the confines of Sitka utilizing entirely local resources and labor.  Exciting times indeed!

I can promise no more Sitka crane rides and as always I am very grateful of your support for our community. And please in your energy discussions, remember our little Blue Lake project and don’t let the rest of the world throw a wet-blanket over all hydro.

Christopher Brewton,

Utility Director, Retired
