Maritime Day
Dear Editor: Sitka Maritime Heritage Society had a busy month of July! We would like to thank everyone who came out and supported our St. Lazaria Island Cruise and our Salmon BBQ/Maritime Day celebration. Attendance for both events was outstanding, and we are so pleased to have shared history and maritime fun with the community. Of course, neither of these events would have been possible without the support of our generous sponsors and volunteers.
Great thanks to Allen Marine Tours for sponsoring our cruise event, and to Matthew Hunter for acting as our history guide as we traveled around Sitka Sound and St. Lazaria. Matthew was able to point out many WWII-era landmarks, and provide interesting details and stories to accompany them. And a big thank you to Naomi Bargmann, the tour naturalist, who helped us spot murres, puffins and more.
SMHS would also like to thank our Salmon BBQ sponsors, including AMSEA, ALFA, Birch Equipment Rentals, Terry and Joanna Perensovich, and especially NSRAA, who generously donated the king salmon. Big thanks go to those who supplied goods and and/or time: The Backdoor, Daily Sitka Sentinel, Gary Perensovich, Nels Klassen, Sandy Poulson, Betsy Longenbaugh, Maggie Schoenfeld and Eric Dow. Great games and activities were hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Sitka Sound Science Center/WhaleFest, Sitka Seafood Festival and AMSEA. AMSEA brought over the water trainer, which proved to be a really fun and wet challenge for everyone who tried it.
And a final thank you to the SMHS board of directors, for all of their wonderful help and support throughout this busy month.
Ashia Lane,
Executive Director

Trees at Moller
Dear Editor: On Saturday, July 20, Tree and Landscape Committee members and other volunteers helped City and Borough of Sitka Park Division staff plant 22 trees at the new Moller Field. Thanks to the extraordinary tree planting crew, all the trees were planted within six hours. The planting was the annual Arbor Day project of the Tree and Landscape Committee.
Landscaping the new field was paid for in part by a grant from the Alaska Community Forestry Program. The alders along the fence were removed earlier this year to prevent damage to the new synthetic turf from leaves, sap and catkin shedding. The new trees selected will remain small, below the fence height, and not shed a lot of leaves or needles.
The Park Division’s recently completed Urban Forest Management Plan recommends using different tree species to diversify the city’s park and building grounds tree inventory. Although the families of trees are much the same as native and ornamental trees that grow here, the species and varieties are different. Korean fir, Japanese white pine, Serbian spruce and Japanese maples were planted.
