Electric Vehicles
Dear Editor: My family owns an electric vehicle (Nissan Leaf) with a regenerative breaking system. When you coast or step on the break, the system charges the battery.
We recently drove up Harbor Mountain Road. We took notes at the bottom of the road and at the top of the road both going up and coming down to see how much battery was used. On the trip up 40 percent of a full battery was used. On the return trip the regenerative breaking system put a 23 percent charge back into the battery. Fifty-five percent of the energy used to climb the mountain was regained by the regenerative breaking system on the drive down the mountain.
While driving around town, the system is also recharging as we slow down and coast down dips in the road. We know that some of you out there are interested in our observations. Happy driving.

Senior Center Lunches
Dear Editor: Every now and then a Sitkan donates fish to the Swan Lake Senior Center for exceptional meals. Such is as the case of J. Wright, a local fisherman. Chef Karren Upcraft, under the leadership of Sandi Koval, are prize staff for the center. They provide meals that are really super.
Those who can’t travel to the center to eat are provided with Meals on Wheels, a daily meal in their homes.
I eat at the senior center daily when available. It’s a great place to eat and to socialize, especially those of my age.
Persons are encouraged to provide fish, pastries and other food items to the senior center when possible. I especially like ice cream.
Again, Sitka has a wonderful senior center especially for those of us who take advantage of these services.
