Police Blotter
Police received the following calls by 8 a.m. today:
August 5
A resident said her friend was bitten by a dog on the Verstovia Trail.
Guns were reported stolen from a downtown storage unit.
A man with heart problems declined an ambulance ride.
A cruise ship captain said someone charged $339.30 on his credit card without permission on July 24.
Live traps were set for feral cats on Baranof Street.
At 12:15 p.m. smoke was reported at a house on Charlie Joseph Street. A resident was helped out and the fire hall cleared the smoke, which turned out to be from burned food.
A resident said a dog attacked her dog on DeGroff Street. The owner of the attacker said he would discuss options with the animal control officer.
At 1:25 p.m. a caller said a bear was eating from her garbage can in the 2600 block of SMC. The bear was later seen at the sign for Thimbleberry trail. A third call about the bear getting into garbage was received from the 2500 block of SMC.
A resident asked for a welfare check on a 6-year-old who was spraying kids in the Burkhart Street neighborhood with Febreeze air freshener, then was unable to get into her own house. Police determined the child had gone home to see if her mom was there, then returned to her babysitter’s house.
A bear was seen at 4:42 p.m. on the bike path in the 2500 block of SMC. Officers, Fish & Wildlife and Fish & Game were advised.
At 6:47 p.m. police were called about an unattended bag at the airport, but it was quickly claimed.
A caller asked to talk to an officer about a firearm.
August 6
At 3:48 a.m. a caller complained about loud music on Andrews Street. All the residents were asleep when police arrived.
Sitka Police
Tommy Svilar, 24, was arrested Monday on a $10,000 warrant, charging him with misconduct involving a controlled substance in the third degree.
Emergency Calls
The fire hall dispatched ambulances on seven medical emergency calls on Monday.
At 12:19 p.m. Monday two fire trucks were sent to 106 Charlie Joseph Street on a report of smoke, which turned out to be from burned food.
CG Rescues Man
Near Ketchikan
A 45-foot Coast Guard boat out of Ketchikan rescued a 58-year-old crew member off the F/V Lake Bay in Revillagigedo Channel Monday, after he sustained a large laceration, 18 miles southeast of Ketchikan.
The Coast Guard boat, with a local EMS crew aboard, took the man to Station Ketchikan, and an ambulance took him to Ketchikan Medical Center.
