Carbon Offset Fund
Dear Editor: It’s easy to feel very discouraged by the enormity of the harm we are doing to our earth globally, but it is helpful to work locally and contribute positively.
Following are some thoughts in response to the Climate Connection article on Friday, July 21. (An excerpt from the article…“Carbon offsets have been largely ineffective, a means of green washing by companies that are not cutting their emissions because they have purchased offsets that are supposed to have others cutting emissions.”)
I absolutely agree that carbon offsets are not, in any way, an answer to our global out-of-control carbon emissions. In Sitka, however, your carbon offset donation will assist with the purchase of a heat pump. Converting from oil heating systems (assoc. with greenhouse gas emissions) to air sourced heat pumps that run on Sitka’s renewable hydroelectricity reduces carbon emissions and decreases Sitka’s carbon footprint.
Sitka Carbon Offset Fund is a local group and project of the Sitka Conservation Society, which uses donations from travelers and Sitka residents to reduce Sitka’s carbon footprint, while helping our neighbors reduce their carbon emissions.
I encourage you to contribute today to the SCOF at https:www.sitkacarbonoffset.com to help local residents cut carbon emissions.
