Sitka Police Department logged the following calls as of 8 a.m. today.
August 5
At 3 a.m. two men at the Crescent Harbor shelter were reported yelling and playing loud music. Officers told them to be quieter. A couple of hours later another noise complaint came in, and officers again told them to be quieter.
A dispute over a phone was reported. Officers advised one person to speak to police in Juneau.
At 3:37 p.m. rocks were reported in the roadway on O’Connell Bridge. Officers removed the rocks.
At 5:29 p.m. a boy, 7, was reported not answering when asked questions by the ranger in the national park. He was reunited with his parents.
At 8:34 p.m. three juveniles were reported “acting weird” in the playground in the 800 block of Lincoln Street.
August 6
At 12:30 a.m. a bartender said a man was refusing to leave a downtown bar. He left before officers arrived.
At 1:15 a.m. a woman said she was unable to find her vehicle in the airport main parking lot. Officers found it had not been impounded, and further investigation followed.
A caller with an altered state of mind was later taken to a hospital.
At 3:44 a.m. police took a woman found sleeping in the 200 block of Katlian was taken to her home.
At 10:28 a.m. a caller in the 3000 block of HPR said a bear had damaged his property, tearing off a 2x4 from the building. Officers suggested he get an electric fence, and gave him a verbal warning for having a bear attractant.
At 11:12 a.m. a downtown store reported someone had left graffiti on the building. The caller did not want to press charges, just to have the incident documented.
At 12:20 p.m. a caller reported hearing a woman screaming at Crescent harbor. Officers were unable to locate a source.
At 2:40 p.m. a caller in the 100 block of Monastery said a National Park Service bicycle was stolen.
A caller said a protective order may have been violated. Police determined it had not.
Police received several calls about a woman walking a small dog in the SMC-Indian River Road area, flipping off drivers. Officers spoke to her about the complaints, and she said she would try to restrain herself.
August 7
At 12:34 a.m. a box was reported in the roadway on the O’Connell Bridge. Officers removed it.
At 2:44 a.m. two men were reported fighting in the Katlian-Lincoln Street area. However, the men told officers they were swatting at mosquitos that were trying to get them.
At 2:55 a.m. a fight was reported going on outside apartments in the 2800 block of HPR. Officers found no disturbance.
At 7:21 a.m. a caller on Eliason Loop reported a boxer-springer spaniel was missing.
A cell phone was turned in.
At 1:19 p.m. a caller reported a broken window in the 200 block of Price Street. A case was opened.
August 8
At 12:23 a.m. a caller reported odd noises from a neighbor’s apartment. Officers found nothing was wrong.
Sitka Police
Daniel O’Neill, 45, was charged Sunday with assault in the third degree.
Paula Jackson, 68, was charged Sunday with violating conditions of release on a March charge of driving under the influence.
Emergency Calls
Sitka Fire Department received seven ambulance calls and two false alarm fire calls Friday; four ambulance calls Saturday; and nine ambulance calls and one false alarm fire call on Sunday.
Coast Guard
Coast Guard Air Station Sitka received a report early today of a boat taking on water near Annette Island, 200 miles south of Sitka, but the case was resolved before the helicopter was launched.
The Coast Guard said Sector Juneau called the Air Station at 7:05 a.m., saying a mayday call had just been received from the 33-foot fishing vessel Rebel Spirit.
Fifteen minutes later, a Good Samaritan vessel was on scene to help, and the helicopter crew stood down. There was no information available about the number on board the Rebel Spirit, or the fate of the vessel, the Coast Guard said.
Wildlife Troopers
Connor F. Cooke, 27, was fined $220 August 6 for allegedly failing to properly complete a sport fishing guide logbook on June 26.
Justin R. Swindler, 40, of Washington, was charged with three counts of making false statements on commercial crew licenses from 2019 to 2021 and one count of false statement on a hunting license. Troopers said their investigation showed that Swindler obtained Alaska resident licenses while not qualified as an Alaska resident.
Daniel J. Eells, 55, of Oregon, was cited for retaining commercial troll bycatch lingcod prior to the season opening on May 16. He was also cited by wildlife troopers for retaining undersize commercial king salmon and failing to indicate partial delivery on fish tickets, on July 17, troopers said.
Yancy Nichol, 59, and Thom Santisakultarm, 36, both of Colorado, were each fined $120 for sport fishing with more than one line in Sitka Sound today. Bail was set at $120 each in the district court at Sitka.
