Two of the younger Baranof Barracudas Swim Club members claimed some top spots in the Age Group Championship meet in Ketchikan, Friday and Saturday.
Both of the two 10-and-under swimmers, Zach Martens and Rhett Walker, swam in a number of events, from the quick 100 freestyle to the daunting 500 free.
“They did really, really well. Their times were great, they swam really well against their competition,” Barracudas coach Kevin Knox told the Sentinel.
“Rhett had a really beautiful 100 IM (individual medley), where he tied for first place. He was actually behind in the entire race except for the very last bit,” Knox said.
Walker took first in the event with his time of 1:20.03. He took second in the 200 IM in 2:56.82 and third in the 100 breaststroke, 50 breast, 500 free, and 200 free.
Martens dominated in the 500 free, 100 butterfly, 200 IM, and 100 fly, claiming first in all three events.
“Zach (Martens) had a really great 500 free. He dropped, I think it was 23 seconds,” Knox said. Martens’ time in the long-distance event was 6:19.72.
He also took seconds in the 100 free, 200 free, 50 breast, and 100 breast.
Knox said other Barracudas qualified for the meet, but busy schedules kept them from attending.
The Masters Championship meet is set for this weekend, in Sitka at the Blatchley pool. The meet is free to attend, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
