Sitka High baseball players split a doubleheader against Thunder Mountain in Juneau Saturday with just a week and a half to go until the Region V tournament.

Thunder Mountain pulled out a narrow 8-9 victory in the first game, but the Wolves flipped the tables in the second match, winning 14-1.

Sitka plays Juneau-Douglas here this week.

On the softball diamond, the Lady Wolves fell four times, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in Juneau. In the opening match, Thunder Mountain downed Sitka 9-1. On Friday, Juneau toppled the Wolves by a narrow margin, 11-9, but on Saturday the Crimson Bears won in a 14-1 landslide. Also on Saturday, TMHS steamrolled Sitka 10-0.

The high school sports year is nearing its conclusion, with the Region V tournament set for May 27-29. While that tournament was originally planned in Ketchikan, a recent spike in coronavirus cases there has forced reconsideration, Sitka High activities Director Rich Krupa said today. A final decision on the location of the Region V games should become official Tuesday, he said. Sitka is the backup location.

Over the past seven days, 71 new virus cases have been logged in Ketchikan, the city EOC reports. The city now has 94 active virus cases, compared to only seven in Sitka as of Friday.

The Wolves baseball and softball squads have one more tournament this week before regions. The baseball team faces Juneau-Douglas again, while the softball squad, which had been slated to play the virus-stricken Ketchikan, will play an alumni game. Both local teams will celebrate their seniors at the games this week.

The schedule is below.
