The Sitka High Wolves grasped defeat from the jaws of victory against the Mt. Edgecumbe Braves Thursday night at Sitka High. After trailing Sitka for most of the game, Edgecumbe rallied to a fourth quarter win 65-61.
With the Region V matchup only days away, the Braves have won each rivalry game this season, though Thursday’s game was the closest one yet this season.
For the first time all year, Sitka High led through much of the match, finishing the first quarter up 15-8. Edgecumbe pushed back in the second, but when the halftime buzzer rang, Sitka clung to a narrow lead, 28-26. The teams stayed close in the third, though Sitka stretched their lead to 48-41.
It was in the fourth quarter that the Braves rallied for the win.
Propelled by 14 points scored from foul shots taken by RJ Alstrom-Beans, Ranen Wassilie, and Fredrick Myers, Mt. Edgecumbe took the lead.
In contrast, the Wolves made only five foul shots, all by Ryan Bartlett.
All told, the Braves scored 32 points from the foul line and only missed 13. The Wolves scored 11 points from fouls and only attempted 16 all told.
The local rivals square off once more this season at the Region V tournament in games next week.
