Dear Editor: Sitka AmeriCorps Program volunteers and ArtistYear fellows will join the Sitka Cemetery Association 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Sitka National Cemetery to commemorate the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance through a community cemetery clean up project.

Volunteers will assist with grounds maintenance, litter removal, and beautification efforts to help preserve one of Sitka’s important historic spaces, a news release from organizers said.

For more information, email Sarah Joan Lawrie, Program Director, lawries@sitkaschools.org.

The 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance (9/11 Day) offers an opportunity to rekindle the unity that swept the nation following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. It is a day to honor those who were lost, the heroic first responders, and the many individuals who continue to serve and protect communities across the country through meaningful acts of service.

“September 11 is a day of history, emotion, and reflection. 9/11 is an opportunity for communities across Alaska to unite in service and volunteerism as we honor the sacrifice of those who lost their lives in 2001 and those who rose in service to our country. This year, on the 25th anniversary of 9/11 we will honor, serve, and unite in this spirit.” – Katie Abbott, Executive Director of the Serve Alaska State Commission.

Congress designated September 11 as a National Day of Service in 2009. The observance is led by AmeriCorps, the federal agency for volunteerism and national service, in partnership with 911Day.org and hundreds of nonprofit, faith-based, school, and business organizations nationwide.

On September 11, 2026, Serve Alaska and AmeriCorps Alaska invite all Alaskans to honor the anniversary by embodying the spirit shown that day through acts of service by reaching out to elders, neighbors in need, and volunteering at local non-profits and faith-based organizations.
