Cheers to School Staff

Posted

Dear Editor: Three cheers for the staff of our schools – I appreciate you.

I am so honored to be part of a team made up of some of the most intelligent, hardworking, kind, and, generous people I’ve ever known. Today was the last day of school, and as I walked the halls and saw my colleagues, still showing up with that never-say-die attitude, I was reminded just how proud I am to be among you.

We give every last ounce of energy to the children and families of this beautiful town. We smile, laugh, and yes, sometimes grimace, as we haul tables and chairs, finalize grades, answer last-minute calls, and send our students into summer with hugs, handshakes, and high fives.

I applaud you all, teachers, paraprofessionals, office staff, administrators, and everyone who keeps our schools running here in the Sitka Schools, our local preschools, and including Mt. Edgecumbe High School.

It’s no secret that many in education are struggling to hold onto hope in this profession. With HB 78 recently vetoed at the governor’s desk and retention numbers falling across the state, the pressures are real. And yet, here in Sitka, you continue to show up with heart, humor, and deep care for your students and families.

I have never been more proud to stand beside you.

Betty Richter, Sitka
