Dear Editor: The Early Childhood Coalition would like to thank the Sitka Assembly for its ongoing attention to the challenges of child care in Sitka. At a recent meeting, the Assembly voted unanimously to proceed with a child care study, to be conducted by the Southeast Childhood Collective. This study will provide an accurate picture of child care in Sitka. Special thanks to Assembly co-sponsors Kevin Mosher, Tim Pike, and Thor Christianson.
Affordable and available child care is the foundation for both a child’s early learning and a stable economy for Sitka. We want a community where young families can envision their future in Sitka.
This study is much needed. The lack of child care is a challenge for families, businesses, and the community of Sitka. The study will update information collected and reported by the Early Childhood Coalition, the Sitka School District, and the Sitka Tribe of Alaska.
Much has changed since these reports were published. Accurate and updated information will help our community find solutions to the problem.
The study will include opportunities for families, child care providers, and the community to meet and share information and solutions for the community.
The Early Childhood Coalition would also like to thank the Health Needs and Human Services Commission for their child care report to the Assembly. Commissioners Annette Evans and Crystal Duncan led the effort.
Thank you,
Early Childhood Coalition, Sitka
