She was born April 27, 1959, in Vancouver, Wash., and raised her children in Sitka and Anchorage.

Crystal loved the ocean air and the freedom of the sea, and was fond of the natural landscape that Alaska has to offer. Alaska was her heart and home for 36 years.

Crystal lived life with an eager soul, a love of family and a need to feel free.

“Though her body has passed, her soul will live on in memories of our loving mother,” her family said.

She is survived by her only daughter, Melissa Carol Valenzuela-Houston, of Everett, Wash.; her two sons, Nieto Valenzuela also of Everett, and Dylan Paul of Wasilla; and her two grandchildren, Justin Valenzuela and Samantha Houston of Everett.

She also leaves behind her father Henry Chartrand and stepmother Lorraine Chartrand of Sitka; her sister Evelyn Glanzer of Wasilla; and her two brothers, David Chartrand of Everett and Richard Chartrand of Juneau.

“We pray, God grant me the serenity to except the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference,” her family said. “May your soul forever rest in peace Momma. We love you and miss you every day that you are gone.”
