Musician, teacher and fisherman David Edgar Glazier died Oct. 16 aboard his boat, the F/V Ulla, in Thomsen Harbor. He was 70.
David was born Sept. 13, 1955, in Salem, Oregon, the son of Hazel Wilma (Brockhoff) and Lyle Ambrose Glazier. He grew up in Salem, graduating from South Salem High School in 1973.
After he received a bachelor's in music performance from the University of Oregon, and a master's from the University of Michigan, he taught music in public schools, first in Salem and Portland, Oregon, then in Kodiak. He next moved to Ketchikan, where he was an itinerant music teacher, traveling to logging camps around Southeast. After a stint in Kotzebue he went on to North Pole, where he retired in 2010 after 30 years of teaching. He returned to Sitka, where he'd been spending summers salmon trolling since about 1994.
David was first and foremost a musician, a sister said. His primary instrument was a clarinet but he could play anything – brass, woodwinds, strings. He also played for pleasure – in Sitka he and friends formed the Thomsen Trio, and he played at KCAW and for the Blessing of the Fleet.
David's second love was the outdoors, be it fishing, mountain climbing, or playing a soft wooden flute to the whales, who came up to listen.
"He was kind, talented, big-hearted and loving," his family said. "He will be greatly missed."
He is survived by his sisters, Patricia Glazier (Phil) of Portland, Oregon, and Sandra Flammini (Phil) of Lacey, Washington; nieces Jessica, Lauren and Megan, and nephews Frank, Jonathan and Nolan; and great-nieces and -nephews Frankie, Ben, Benaiah, Hazel, Abigail and Eloise.
A celebration of David's life is tentatively planned for next spring or summer, in Sitka. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Fish for Schools, or any local organization that helps provide food for individuals or families.
