Community Calendar
Dear Editor: Once again it is time for the annual community calendaring meeting, for those in Sitka who plan events, produce shows, and offer programs to get together and attempt to avoid duplication of dates.
We will meet to look at our scheduled events from March of 2014 thru April of 2015. In the past these efforts have allowed dates to be shifted and served the purpose of avoiding overlapping events. At a meeting several years ago facilitated by a Rasmuson consultant, about 35 different Sitka people decided that this was a real need for our community and decided that the Greater Sitka Arts Council would coordinate the event.
This time around, the meeting will be Jan. 7 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Harrigan Centennial Hall. As always, Sitkans are advised to check with Raven Radio’s community calendar when looking for something to do or when planning to schedule an event. This meeting is to try to avoid future overlapping events. Contact me with questions at 747 4821 or email sitkaaarts@yahoo.com. Thank you.
Jeff Budd,
Greater Sitka Arts Council

Regional Sports
Dear Editor: In the past five weeks, MEHS and SHS have hosted both the Region V 3A/4A Volleyball Championships and Region V 123A Wrestling Championships. Between these two events there were more than 200 student/athlete participants from almost every community in the panhandle. These major events were vital opportunities for Sitka to showcase our city, our athletes and the talents of the entire region. These sporting events also brought in hundreds of adults that spend money in our hotels, B&Bs, restaurants and stores.
The wrestling and volleyball championships would not have been possible without the help of local businesses and community members. I would like to thank Totem Square Inn for donating all the hotel rooms for our officials. Thank you to Sitka Bottling, Subway, Sea Mart, AC Lakeside, Fish Eye Coffee and Premier Foods for donating to the hospitality room.
I would also like to thank Paula Clayton and September Horton for running the amazing hospitality rooms as well as the MEHS and SHS staff/parents who donated to the tournament with food, housing out kids from around the region and anything else needed to make it work.
Thank you to Mary Martin for organizing all the volleyball officials and Scott McAdams for finding volleyball housing. And thanks to Eric Jordan for announcing the wrestling tournament. Thank you to Stu Merchant (Klawock) and Di Thain (Craig) for helping run a great wrestling tournament.
Special thanks to Gio Villoneuva PT, ATC, of SEARHC Hospital for organizing all of the medical coverage for both volleyball and wrestling tournaments. Also, Alex Desatoff, PT, Alicia Olson, PT, Jessica Pyatt, PT, Keils Kitchen, PA-C, Irbert Vega, MD, and Doc Lehmann all deserve thanks for volunteering hours of medical support and training.
Thanks, again, to all of our volunteers and MEHS student workers whomake these great events happen in Sitka. It truly is a team effort to make this all happen.
