Heat Pumps

Dear Editor: Heat pumps: making them work at their best and adding heat pump dryers and water heater to our household.

I have had a forced air heat pump in my house for 15 years. Things that I have noticed in those 15 years and investigated have been a forced air heat pump loses a lot of its efficiency due to air temp outside being so much colder than inside, especially in winter.

Ground source heat pumps and water source – ocean, lake, well – are so much better. Air source is still very good. To make it work well, air source, set control to heat and maximum fan in winter. Set temperature 5 degrees more than you want because sensors on the inside unit is at ceiling, not like Monitor heaters, close to the floor.

Heat pumps should be doing our hot water and drying of our clothes. I have installed a heat pump hot water heater – it’s called a Stiebel Eltron plug-and-play unit. It’s just over $2,000 and saves $350 off electricity a year and also dehumidifies and puts out some heat in the room.
