Dear Editor: Can anybody here tell me on what conceivable basis President-elect Trump and his devotees are claiming that the election constitutes a “Mandate to Make America Great Again?”
As it stands right now, Trump won 49.9% of the total popular vote. That means that 50.1% of voters voted AGAINST him.
Given that voter turnout was at about 64%, that means that only 31.9% of all eligible-to-vote Americans chose Trump to be their next president. Only 31.0% wanted Harris.
On what possible grounds and by what imaginable standards is that to be considered a “landslide” or “massive” or “overwhelming” victory? Or any kind of a “mandate” to do anything about anything at all, as Trump and his followers are declaring?
