A Place to Nap

Dear Editor: Ahh, a nap. How many of us relish a nice nap, especially on a cold or wet winter day? Maybe it has been a busy week, a chore-filled day, or a new novel is calling your name. Whether you slip into pajamas or just crawl under a fleece blanket on the couch or your bed, a nap is often easily had – when you’re housed.

Imagine now if you were unhoused or homeless. First, is your sleeping place warm and dry enough for a spontaneous nap? Probably not. Is it easily accessible? Probably not, as you may sleep in one place, hang out in another, and eat in a different place. Is it safe? Maybe you try to keep your space as secret as possible, so heading there during the middle of the day might not be the best idea.

If the idea of the freedom for every citizen to take a restful nap whenever they want to appeals to you, please look deep in your heart and reach into your pocket to support the work of the Sitka Homeless Coalition. We are raising money and community support to build 12 cabins for our unhoused citizens here in Sitka. A place where each person can lock their door and cozy up under a blanket on their bed for a much-needed nap. Go to www.sheletersitka.org to donate via PayPal or drop off a donation at ALPS at 401 Halibut Point Road. Call me with questions, (907) 738-2393.
